Dear Mr. Weener, Trustee :
The Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection (MassDEP) has selected the above
referenced site for an audit. MassDEP conducts audits of response actions carried out at disposal
sites, in order to ensure that these actions meet the requirements of Massachusetts laws and
regulations, including Chapter 21E of Massachusetts General Law (M.G.L.) and the Massachusetts
Contingency Plan or MCP (310 CMR 40.0000). The audit process is explained on MassDEP ' s
webpage "Waste Site Cleanup Audit Program" at

On September 4, 1996, MassDEP received a Downgradient Property Status Submittal for the
above-referenced site.
Staff from MassDEP 's Northeast Regional Office are now reviewing information contained in
the site file, including but not limited to :
• "Chapter 21E Site Assessment, Salem Plating, 50 Broadway, Salem, Massachusetts
(MA)", by D .L. Maher Company and dated November 1986;
• "Site Investigation at 50 Broadway, Salem, MA", by CORE Environmental &
Engineering Resources, Inc. and dated December 27, 1988 ;

• Letter titled "Results of Well Installation and Sampling, 50 Broadway Street, Salem,
MA" by CORE Environmental & Engineering Resources, Inc. and dated March 28, 1991 ;
and
• "Downgradient Property Status Submittal for property located at 50 Broadway, Salem,
MA", by Decoulos & Company and dated August 30, 1996.
Once MassDEP completes the site audit, a Notice of Audit Findings (NOAF) will be issued
summarizing the results of the audit.
If MassDEP finds that response actions were not conducted in compliance with the MCP, you
will be notified of the actions needed to return to compliance. MassDEP may set deadlines for
the correction of any violations.
