LEONARD ENGINEERING, INC. 251 Mundy Street, Suite C Wilkes-Barre,PA 18702 (570)208-7233 www.LEldesigns.biz December 3, 2015 Jim Laskowski Endless Mountain Solar Services 288 Kidder Street Wilkes-Barre, PA 18702 Re: Russell Residence,9 Liberty Hlll Street,Salem,MA Dear Mr. Laskowski, As you requested, I have performed a structural evaluation of the roof framing at the above referenced residence. It is my understanding that solar panels weighing less than 4 pounds per square foot(psf)are proposed to be installed on the south face of the main house hip roof. Per your inspection, pictures and layout plan, the roof is framed with older 2x6 (2" x 5 3/4")rafters spaced at 28" max. on center and spanning 1 1'-6" and 12'-6" from the ridge to the exterior walls. The roof slopes at an 11:12 pitch. The Massachusetts Amendment to the 2009 International Residential Building Code snow chart indicates the design ground snow load in Salem is 40 pounds per square foot(psf), which translates to a roof snow load of 28 psf. Because of the 11:12 pitch, the design snow load can be reduced to the code-minimum live load of 20 psf. The roof dead load of the rafters, sheathing, insulation and shingles is approximately 7 psf and the addition of the solar panels results in a total dead load of I 1 psf. For this evaluation, it was assumed the framing members are typical spruce-pine-fir mix, No. 2 or better. Our calculations indicate the 2x6 rafters spanning 1 1'-6" are stressed to 99% their capacity under the full snow load, existing dead load and proposed solar panel weight, which is acceptable. However the rafters spanning 12'-6" are stressed to 1 18% of their capacity under similar loading and therefore must be reinforced. I recommend sistering 2x6 rafters to each of the rafters spanning 12-6" to increase their bending strength. The added members shall extend to within 12" of the supports at each end of the existing rafters and shall be attached with IOd nails at 12" on center, top and bottom, staggered. If an existing rafter is split or damaged, an additional member shall be added to both sides of the rafter. If the existing rafters are damaged near the ridge or wall bearing location, at least one sistered member shall extend to the ridge or just past the wall. No other framing areas were included in the scope of this evaluation. The above opinion is based on the above information provided by you and the assumption that the framing members are in sound condition. Any deviations from the above criteria discovered during the course of the work must be immediately brought to our attention. Please call me with any questions.
