LEONARD ENGINEERING, INC. 251 Mundy Street, Suite C Wilkes-Barre, PA 18702 (570)208-7233 www.LEIdesigns.biz July 21, 2015 Jim Laskowski Endless Mountain Solar Services 288 Kidder Street Wilkes-Barre, PA 18702 Re: Machado Residence,28 Leavitt Street,Salem,MA Dear Mr. Laskowski, As you requested, I have performed a structural evaluation of the roof framing at the above referenced residence. It is my understanding that solar panels weighing approximately 4 pounds per square foot(psf) are proposed to be installed on the south side of the main gable roof. Per your inspection and layout plan, the gable is framed with 2x8 rafters spaced at 16" on center and sloping at a 8:12 pitch. The rafters span a maximum horizontal span of 14'-8" horizontally from the exterior wall to the ridge. The rafters are also supported by a knee wall located 6'-8" from the exterior bearing wall. The Massachusetts Amendment to the 2009 International Residential Building Code snow chart indicates the design ground snow load in Salem is 40 pounds per square foot(psf), which translates to a flat roof snow load of 28 psf. Because the roof slopes at a 8:12 pitch, the design roof snow load can be further reduced to 27 psf.The roof dead load of the rafters/planking/shingles is approximately 10 psf and the addition of the solar panels results in a total dead load of 14 psf. For this evaluation, it was assumed the roof members are typical spruce-pine-fir mix, No. 2 or better. Our calculations indicate the 2x8 rafters spanning 14'-8" (ignoring the knee wall)are stressed to 97% of their total bending capacity under the code-required live loading plus the existing dead loads with the new solar panels. Therefore it is my opinion the proposed solar panels can be safely installed without reinforcement of the roof framing. The above opinion is based on the above information provided by you and the assumption that the framing members are in sound condition. Any deviations from the above criteria discovered during the course of the work must be immediately brought to our attention. Please call me with any questions. Thomas Leonard,P.E.
