LEONARD ENGINEERING, INC. 251 Mundy Street, Suite C Wilkes-Barre,PA 18702 (570)208-7233 www.LEIdesigns.biz October 17, 2015 Jim Laskowski Endless Mountain Solar Services 288 Kidder Street Wilkes-Barre,PA 18702 Re: Walcutt Residence,34 Japonica Street,Salem,MA Dear Mr. Laskowski, As you requested, I have performed a structural evaluation of the roof framing at the above referenced residence. It is my understanding that solar panels weighing approximately 4 pounds per square foot(psf)are proposed to be installed on the south side of the main house roof. Per your inspection and layout plan, the upper roof is a gable structure framed with 2x6 rafters spaced at 24" on center, sloping at a 10:12 pitch. The rafters span 13"-0" maximum horizontally from the ridge to the exterior bearing walls with intermediate bearing knee walls. The lower roof is a shed structure tied into the main house sidewall and running at,a 3:12 pitch down to a single story rear wall. This roof is framed with 2x10 joists at 16" on center. The Massachusetts Amendment to the 2009 International Residential Building Code snow chart indicates the design ground snow load in Salem is 40 pounds per square foot(psf), which translates to a flat roof snow load of 28 psf. Because of the 10:12 pitch, the roof snow load may be reduced to 21 psf.The roof dead load of the rafters/planking/shingles is approximately LO psf and the addition of the solar panels results in a total dead load of 14 psf. For this evaluation, It was assumed the roof members are typical spruce-pine-fir mix, No. 2 or better. Our calculations indicate the 2x6 rafters are stressed to 156% of their capacity under the full snow load, existing dead load and proposed solar panel weight. Therefore the rafters must be reinforced prior to installing the solar panels. I recommend sistering 2x6 rafters to each of the existing rafters to increase their bending strength. The added members shall extend to within 12" of each end of the existing rafters and shall be attached with 10d nails at 12" on center, top and bottom, staggered. If an existing rafter is split or damaged, an additional member shall be added to both sides of the rafter. If the existing rafters are damaged near the ridge or wall bearing location, at least one sistered member shall extend to the ridge or just past the wall. No other framing areas were included in the scope of this evaluation. The above opinion is based on the above information provided by you and the assumption that the framing members are in sound condition. Any deviations from the above criteria discovered during the course of the work must be immediately brought to our attention. Please call me with any questions. NOF414,9 THOMAS G.9cc Thomas Leonard, P.E. a LEONARD President STRUCTURAL n No 49749 S o ¢ q}c FfSTGPE `y. >= CS-10821-, q E eJ C CY.AR 1 tt;stlL ,JV ... 394 ELM STREET Czrdner DMA 01=10 ' OG/02/20 i B _- Iai _/(i"?Oi'E`iCi:/.rZ'G!/'P.rG°yLo"C ipa_ S-'L'7/.7J{!"✓Gv'Jt`Ti' Office of Consumer Affairs and Business Regulation -= = 10 Park Plaza - Suite 5170 Boston, Massachusetts 02116 Home Improvement Contractor Registration Registration: 174479 Type: LLC Expiration: 1/28/2017 Tr# 261910 ENDLESS MOUNTAINS SOLAR SERVICES, MICHAEL PITCAVAGE 288 KIDDER STREET - WILKES BARRE, PA 18702 Update Address and return card.Mark reason for change.
