You should understand that the Salem Fire Department is but one of several
departments within the City of Salem to which information can be obtained
concerning flammable liquid storage, releases, or hazardous wastes. It is
quite probable that this department would have no knowledge of the
presence of hazardous' wastes on any particular site since this department
does not do independent hwrnrdous waste investigations.
To assist you in conducting your environmental assessment of the site, we
are able to inform you as indicated by the report attached and/or
enclosures.
As stated above, the records of the Salem Fire Department do not permit
you to rely upon the information contained in this letter as being either
definitive or complete. The information in this letter is provided to you
as a courtesy in conducting your investigation, and is provided on the
express condition that no liability shall attach or be asserted against
the City of Salem, the Salem Fire Department:, nor it's employees or
members in connection with providing this information to you, or in the
event of any inaccuracy or omission thereof.

On this date I was called to #471 Highland Avenue by Lt. Jellison for a
gasoline spill. An employee of the Malone Fence Company was pumping
gasoline from one of two pumps on the property into a truck. He left the
pump unattended and the gasoline spilled into the street for approximately
five minutes. The spill ran down an incline, in the gutter, to the first
catchbasin at the Lynn line.
This property is owned and operated by Mr. Richard Malone, and is not
currently used as a service station. The former owner, Mr. Arthur N.
Zetes is licensed for the storage of 5,000 galons of gasoline effective
April 30, 1985. According to Mr. Malone, there are two underground tanks
each having a capacity of 1,000 gallons.
According to Mr. Malone, the tanks were measured on October 3rd, at which
time the tank in question measured seven inches of product. Folowing the
spill, the tank measured five inches of product. The truck being fueled
at the time of the spill contained fifteen gallons.
Pump readings following the spill were 6154.55 for the unleaded, and
5242.90 for the regular. I ordered the pumps to be padlocked, and that no
product be dispensed.
D.E.Q.E. in Woburn was notified and ordered the owner to hire an
authorized cleanup firm to effect removal of the spill. Mr. Malone called
Clean Harbors to do the work and indicated to me that it is his intention
to have both the tanks and pumps removed in the near future. I ordered
the product be removed by an authorized agent as soon as possible.
