RE:Inspection of Structural Repairs at 2 Buffum Street
Dear Mr. Addison,
I recently inspected the on-going construction work at your fire-damaged property at 2 Buffum
Street and observed the structural repairs being made by your contractor. The contractor has made
several significant repairs to the house's structural system which were necessary to correct
defects in the original structure and not as a result of the fire damage. These repairs include the
following:
• The main carrying wall running the long dimension of the house has been
substantially replaced as the existing construction was insufficient to carry the
load of the second floor. The bearing wall at the first floor running in the short
dimension of the house was also rebuilt for the same reason.
• 2 multiple-member LVL Beams were inserted into the second floor construction
to adequately support the gable end walls and partial roof loads. Additionally,4
4x4 fir and 2 40 versalam posts were added to support the new beams. Not yet
installed are 2 new steel lally columns (and footings) that must be installed under
the main carrying beam at the first floor to support the new versalam posts.
• The existing window headers consisting of 3 stacked 2x4's at 2 openings at the
first floor were replaced with double 2x10 headers to correct the inadequate
existing condition.
• New fire blocking has been or will be installed at the entire perimeter of the first
and second floors because the existing construction either lacked fire blocking or
used bricks which prevent insulation of the wall cavity.
All of the completed work described above has been adequately installed and was clearly
necessary to correct defects in the existing Structure. The lally columns and some of the fire-
blocking not yet installed is also necessary
