MORSE v)t to 6 ZS CITY OF SALEM HEALTH DEPARTMENT BOARD OF HEALTH 9 North Street ROBERT E. BLENKHORN Salem.Massachusetts 01970 HEALTH AGENT 508-741-1800 August 6, 1991 Mr. Dan Morse 27 Riverview Street Beverly, MA 01915 RE: QUONSET HUT, BAKER'S ISLAND Dear Mr. Morse: In receipt of your correspondence dated July 25, 1991, the Health Department concurs with the proposed Quonset Hut Replacement due to the fact that the new structure will be reduced from two units to one unit havine only one bedroom. The reduced occupancy of the structure, as well as the described frequency of use should decrease the load on the exsisting disposal system. Water used for the purpose of drinking, cooking, washing etc. must be purchased from an approved source or obtained from a private well which meets safe drinkinz water standards. If you have any questions, contact this office at 741-1800. Very truly yours, FOR THE BOARD OF HEALTH REPLY TO Robert E. Blenkhorn, C.H.O. William T. Burke, III, R.S. QUL 2 G 1991 PORTLAND, ME 04102 ,rte, rYl OF SALEX DATE: April 28, 1991 "-ALTH DEPT SUBJECT: History of Plumbing, Quonset Hut, Winne-Egan Trust, Bakers Island FROM: R. L. Morse, Owner The Quonset but in question was built in 1948 as joint venture between Lawence F. Moore and Hector MacDonald. The but (20' x 40') was divided in the middle for two separate living units and two separate toilet and kitchen facilities which were connected to a single cesspool. The property was purchased by Newlin Smith in 1958 and his family lived in the south half of the structure, maintaining the south kitchen and toilet. The north living unit was converted to a storage unit, the north toilet was discontinued. The property was purchased by myself and wife in 1971, maintaining the same facilities and using it principally weekends during the summer. It is our intention to replace the but with a single family structure (25' x 25') principally for weekend use. We intend to have a single toilet and kitchen and connect to the existing sewer. Through these years I know of no failures of the sewer and there have been no complaints of abbuters or others on the island. s QUI 2 6 1991 DATE: July 25, 1991 myj OF SALEM SUBJECT: Addendum to Robert L. Morse's letter of April 28, 1LT'4a7g1 the History of Plumbing in the Quonset Hut, Baker's Island FROM: Daniel W, Morse, son In addition to the information given in my father's letter, I would like to describe the history of the house's water supply and septic system in more detail. Running water for the Quonset Hut was taken from the island pond, via the community water line running across our property. Water for the proposed structure will be supplied by rain caught on its roof. There are two reasons for this change. First, the pond sometimes dries out and is thus not reliable, and second, the water lines which presently supply the house are disconnected from September to May to preven bursting. The proposed structure is intended for use in these colder months, so an independent water source is needed. Rainwater will only be used for flushing the toilet; drinking water will still be carried from the community artesian well and kept in a seperate container inside. The septic system mentioned in my father's letter consists of two 60-gallon steel lined tanks connected by a six-inch cast iron pipe. The primary tank is covered with a 3/4-inch steel plate and a concrete rim, at a depth of six inches below grade. The secondary tank is located eight feet downhill from the primary tank, at a depth of 12 inches below grade. I also know of no failures of the system or complaints from island residents. The proposed structure will be occupied less frequently than the Quonset Hut was. Various people spent summers there, including myself and my brother, and our guests. The new stucture is intended for weekend use by two people in the fall and spring and occasionally in the summer. Thus the expected occupancy will decrease from two or more people all summer, to two people on occasional weekends. This decrease was made possible by our family's purchase of another house on the island, which has no heating facilities. My parents' desire to visit the island in the colder months prompted them to rebuild the Quonset Hut.
