Subject: Water Quality of Seyeral Wells on Baker's Island
On August23, 1994, I met with Keith Russell of the
oBaker's Island Homeowners Corporation in order to
collect water samples from several wells located on
Baker's Island. These samples were tested by Maria
Tricomi, Microbiologist, at the Salem-Beverly Water
Board for fecal and total coliform bacteria in order to
determine the suitability of these wells for drinking
water.
Several private wells did appear to be contaminated
with coliform bacteria which is an indicator organism
for septic contamination. However, the MORSE well
was negative for these bacteria. In addition, it
appears that ARTESIAN WEST , ARTESIAN EAST
and UPPER COAST GUARD could be acceptable
sources for drinking water following a
decontamination proceedure for background bacteria.
Mr. Tricomi will meet with Mr. Russell on the Island
within the next few weeks to discuss and demonstrate
the proper method of decontamination.
It is recommended that only the wells which tested.
negative for coliform bacteria or those able to be
disinfected be used as a drinking water source. Water
from the other wells tested pose a serious potential
avenue for transmission of illness and disease.
It was a pleasure meeting Mr. Russell. We agree that
testing in 1995 should take place early in the spring.
