RIP RAP SLOPE LTR Griffin Engineering Group, u.c May 10, 2018 Mr. David Knowlton, P.E., City Engineer City of Salem 120 Washington Street, 3`d Floor Salem, MA 01970 Subject: Rip Rap Embankment 15 Nurse Way Assessor's Map 9 Parcel 337 Dear Mr. Knowlton: As requested by Mr. Kenneth Steadman, Principal of Bartlett & Steadman Contractors, and Ms. Giovanna Z. Recinos, Salem Junior Engineer, this letter addresses the stability of the rip-rap slope constructed along Nurse Way at the subject location. The subject slope varies in elevation from approximately four to eight feet and has a 1:1 slope. A photograph of the slope is attached. The slope was constructed by Bartlett & Steadman and is made up of blast rock from the subdivision project; the largest rocks are approximately 24 to 30 inches in dimension. Voids have been filled with smaller rock. Uphill of the slope is a relatively-level lawn area across the southern half of the slope and a small (approximately 2'-tall landscape wall and planting bed). These lawn and plant beds receive stormwater runoff from approximately one-fourth of the building roof. No erosion of the plant bed or lawn was apparent during our inspection this week. The foundation of the adjacent residence is constructed on a blasted ledge surface. Based on our visual inspection of the slope and its adjacent surfaces, it is our opinion that the slope is stable and adequately supports the adjacent uses. Should you have any comments or questions regarding our assessment, or require additional information, please do not hesitate to contact the undersigned.
