Salem Building Department Perimeter drain requirement

Dear Mr. St.Piere':
On May 21, 20011 visited the above referenced site to determine the soil type used as
backfill around the existing foundation on the lot. The soils appeared to consist of well
graded to poorly graded sand and gravel sand mixture with little fines. There appeared to
be a significant amount of blasted ledge on the site which was used for backfill material
as well. Based on my observation, I would classify the existing material on the site as
conforming to the Group I Soil Group(ref. Unified Soil Classilication System). Based
on this information, in accordance with the State Building code 780 CMR: Section
3604.5.1, the exception to the perimeter drain requirement would apply.

Dear Mr. Heyland:
I received your fax regarding the drainage issue at 3 Autumn Circle. In your letter you
mentioned a perimeter drain pursuant to local building code.
Please be advised that there are no local building codes allowed in Massachusetts. The
drainage is required under State Building Code 780 C.M.R. Section 3604.5.1
You will find an exception to the perimeter drain requirement under this section. It is up
to you to determine soil type and suitability.
