It is hereby certified that the Salem Historical Commission has determined that the proposed:

as described below will be appropriate to the preservation of said Historic District, as per the requirements set
forth in the Historic District's Act (M.G.L. Ch. 40C) and the Salem Historic Districts Ordinance.

Description of Approval of Work:
• New retaining wall (after the fact) with the following conditions:
o Existing retaining wall to be removed and replaced with mortared fieldstone wall with no cap per
attached image 1;
o Retaining wall to begin at edge of sidewalk as low curb;
o New wood capped picket fence to be installed on retaining wall. Fence to match fencing at 188
Federal Street (attached image 2) except for intermediary posts to be shortened and hidden behind
pickets (per attached image 3). Replace storm windows and storm door with new storm windows
and door in black.
Upon completion of work, please notify Historical Commission staff as final sign-off is required to
document compliance with this Certificate.

violation). All work commenced must be completed within one year from this date unless otherwise indicated.
THIS IS NOT A BUILDING PERMIT. Please be sure to obtain the appropriate permits from the Inspector of
Buildings (or any other necessary permits or approvals) prior to commencing work.
