STRUCTURAL REPORT
FIRM ESCAPE REPAIRS
393 ESSEX STREET
SALEM, MA 01970
An engineering review and evaluation was made for the repair work on the fire escape located at the subject
location. In accordance with the IFC Code: 1104.16.5.1 "Fire escape stairs and balconies shall be examined for
structural adequacy and safety every (5) five years by a Licensed Design Professional."An inspection report
shall be submitted to the fire code official.
The referenced fire escape was renovated due to rust and corrosion. All major structural connections and
handrails.were re-welded.where required. Silicone was applied to.the steel.connections. To mitigate future
corrosion, the structure was Electra brushed and prepared before the final rust preventative primer and industrial
enamel paint was applied. Gratings and railings were painted with Rustoleum® Gloss Black Enamel Paint. A
hammer test was conducted at random locations to determine steel integrity.
Work completed includes the following:
All stair treads re-welded with 70xx electrodes on both sides of the tread around 2 inches long
Treads have approximately 2 inches of weld per side on every stair tread
Welds done after the area is cleared of all paint and rust to obtain a clean weld
Re-weld all major structural connections
Re-weld all handrail connections as well as all brackets
Electra brush removal of all loose paint
Verify all wall attachments and silicone or hydraulic cement where necessary
Spot primed exposed metal area where needed
Paint entire fire escape with Industrial Enamel BLACK paint
Engineer certification letter stating that fire escape will pass all current load tests and meets all state
requirements
All structural connections to the building siliconized with 25-year black silicon sealer. (Silicon is to
ensure that no water penetrates into the building and structural connections.)
25-year structural warranty included

concentrated loads required by the current Building Code for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.
