It is hereby certified that the Salem Historical Commission has determined that the proposed:

limitations set forth in the Historic District's Act (M.G.L. Ch. 40C) and the Salem Historic Districts Ordinance.

Description of Work Proposed:
▪ Repoint 2 masonry chimneys. Remove existing mortar to a minimum depth of 2 to 2½ width of joint to ensure
adequate bond. Mortar should be removed by hand or with small pneumatically-powered chisels to avoid damage to
masonry. Mechanical tools shall not be used on vertical joints.
▪ Mortar should match the following:
☒ Type N (1 part cement/1 part lime/6 parts sand) for hard-cored brick and most exterior above-grade walls
exposed to severe weather including chimneys.
▪ Mortar to match existing color, grain size, texture, and tooling/pointing style.
▪ All existing mortar to be repointed to eliminate differential colors
▪ Cleaning of masonry surfaces to be by gentlest means possible, such as washing with lower pressure water and soft
natural bristle brushes. High pressure washing and sandblasting is not allowed.
▪ Waterproof coatings and sealants should be avoided.
☒ Mason to provide test 1’ x 1’ sample of mortar application before commencing project
• A representative from the HDC or staff needs to approve the sample prior to full installation
There will be no changes in color, material, design, location, or outward appearance. Non-applicable due to being in-kind repair.
Upon completion of above work, please notify Historical Commission staff as final sign -off is required to document compliance
with this Certificate and approved plans.
