Decision:To recommend approval of the project as presented with the removal of the chimney.
Referenced Plans and Documents:
- Application documents prepared by Pitman & Wardley Associates, LLC, 32 Church Street, Salem, MA 01970,
revised to 9/22/21.
Conditions of Approval:
- Consistency with Approved Design/Plans: Should the applicant determine that the project may not be completed
as presented and conditioned herein, he/she/they shall return to the DRB to review proposed modifications prior to
making any changes in the field.

Findings:

Throughout the Board's deliberations on this proposal members discussed the SRA's unanimous vote to have the
applicant retain the chimney on this structure.
Board members found that they were in disagreement with the SRA's requirement for the following reasons: (1) the
chimney does not represent a particular historical period nor is it an original feature on the building; (2) the thin
profile and small footprint of the chimney is not aesthetically pleasing; and (3) the structure of the chimney is not
stable and its future stability is in question even if the applicant is able to shore it up, creating safety and liability
concerns for residents and the property owner.
Board members determined that if the chimney is to remain on the building, it needs to be stabilized and retained
with its current materials; recreating the chimney in new materials is not desirable.
