Yes.
We have to:
1) get permission from owner of unit 3
2) wedge ourselves out a 24ish inch wide window
From a man who has had to do this a few times in the winter when it's icy...it's pretty miserable and really dangerous.
Often we have to throw a rope down over the side and pull up shovels hand over hand, because they can't fit out the window

Good Morning,
I have reviewed your building permit application to install a vertical access ladder at 304 Essex Street.
This exterior change to the facade of the building requires review by the Salem Redevelopment Authority and its Design Review Board.
The Design Review Board meets next week, Wednesday, December 16th. I have added this project to the agenda. However, in order for the board to review the
application, I will need the following information:
1. Email address of the person who will be attending the meeting next week;
2. Dimensions of the ladder;
2. Dimensions of the railing on the roof;
3. Color of the ladder and railing;
4. Purpose of the ladder (emergency access for residential unit or access to the roof);and
5. Photo of the building and facade where the ladder is proposed.
You may respond with this information via email.
I have attached the agenda for next week’s meeting; please have someone attend that is familiar with the project and can address the Board’s questions.
I am working in the office today, Wednesday until 4pm, and tomorrow, Thursday from 8-4 and can be reached by phone or email if you have any questions
about the review process.

Aluminum resists rust while reducing the cost and
lifetime maintenance. Ensures OSHA compliance is
maintained. Steel ladders, guardrails, and platforms
require galvanization or need to be made from stainless
steel.
Steel products are harder to transport, maneuver, and
cost more to ship, install, and maintain. Aluminum
systems are modular, lightweight, and easy to maneuver
and install with little to no additional equipment
needed.
Steel must be fabricated to order. Lead times are
typically 4-5 weeks. Our aluminum components are
pre fabricated and engineered to be modular so they're
ready to ship.
Steel is difficult to cut on-site. Often, it requires a hot
permit and welding. High tensile aluminum can be easily
cut on-site to exact measurements.
Steel ladders generally have narrow rungs that are
uncomfortable and less safe for the end user.
Ergonomically designed profiled rungs for increased
safety and comfort for the end user.

Ladder Fall Arrest SystemARRESTA
The ARRESTA Ladder Fall Arrest System provides continuous, hands-free fall protection when
accessing heights greater than 24 ft. This system can be easily installed on the KATTCLIMB RL30
Vertical Fixed Ladders.
The ARRESTA Ladder Fall Arrest System is sold in a complete kit and includes as follows:
• Stainless steel cable (to suit the height required)
• Ladder mounting bracket system
• Tensioner device
• Termination device
• Cable guides (for heights over 26 ft.)
The ladder fall arrest cable grab, energy absorber, and harness are sold separately. Please note that a
harness with a front D-ring is required for this system. Fixfast recommend at least two cable grabs and
harnesses are purchased with each ladder.

Capacity: Unit shall support a 1000lb loading without failure, and individual treads shall withstand
a 1000lb loading without failure. Industrial rated, suited to high frequency usage. Support structure
integrity, suitability and fixing method to be assessed and determined by a engineer unless it is clear to a
competent person prior to installation. Arresta Vertical Line Fall Arrest System must be only used with the
approved fall arrest device and harness system incorporating front chest attachment and energy
absorber as per OSHA & ANSI regulations.
COMPLIANCE
KATTCLIMB ladder systems are designed and manufactured to meet and exceed requirements of OSHA
standard 1910.23, 1910.28, CAL-OSHA 3277 and ANSI A14.3 as applicable.
PRODUCT WARRANTY
10 years from date of purchase subject to correct installation, use and maintenance in accordance with
manufacturer’s specifications and recommendations. Failure to supply and/or install proprietary product
in accordance with above standards and codes, specifications and instructions voides complete system

Small Project Review – Installation of Rooftop Access Ladder
Meeting Date: December 16, 2020

Decision: At a regular meeting of the Design Review Board (DRB), upon a motion duly made and
seconded, it was unanimously voted to recommend approval of the proposed rooftop access ladder as
designed and conditioned herein.

Andover, MA 01845, dated 11/25/19.

Condition of Approval: The DRB recommends incorporating the following condition:
1. Consistency with Approved Design/Plans: Should the applicant determine that the project may
not be completed as presented and conditioned herein, he/she/they shall return to the DRB to
review proposed modifications prior to making any changes in the field.
2. Color of Ladder: The ladder shall be powder coated black. All of the components to the ladder,
including fixtures and the rooftop landing and railings shall be powder coated black.
Findings
1. Consistency with Design Standards and Guidelines: This project is consistent with the design
guidelines and standards.
2. Sensitivity to Historic Structure: The black ladder will be a more appropriate addition to the
building than a silver aluminum ladder. The matte black of the powder coating will blend with
the building and complement the building’s existing black details.
