We have to: 1) get permission from owner of unit 3 2) wedge ourselves out a 24ish inch wide window From a man who has had to do this a few times in the winter when it's icy...it's pretty miserable and really dangerous. Often we have to throw a rope down over the side and pull up shovels hand over hand, because they can't fit out the window Sent from my T-Mobile 4G LTE Device Get Outlook for Android From: Kathryn Newhall-Smith <knewhallsmith@Salem.com> Sent: Thursday, December 10, 2020 1:42:40 PM To: Shane Yellin <shane@dynamicpropertymanagement.net>; 'patrick@osgoodcompanies.com' <patrick@osgoodcompanies.com> Cc: 'John Casey (john@johncaseyfineart.com)' <john@johncaseyfineart.com>; 'mail@justinmiller.co' <mail@justinmiller.co>; 'Adam Kaczmarek (adamkaz414@gmail.com)' <adamkaz414@gmail.com> Subject: RE: Installation of Ladder at 304 Essex Street, Salem Hello, Is the window in the photo how the roof is currently accessed? Ensures OSHA compliance is maintained. Steel ladders, guardrails, and platforms require galvanization or need to be made from stainless steel. Steel products are harder to transport, maneuver, and cost more to ship, install, and maintain. Aluminum systems are modular, lightweight, and easy to maneuver and install with little to no additional equipment needed. Steel must be fabricated to order. Lead times are typically 4-5 weeks. Our aluminum components are pre fabricated and engineered to be modular so they're ready to ship. Steel is difficult to cut on-site. Often, it requires a hot permit and welding. High tensile aluminum can be easily cut on-site to exact measurements. Steel ladders generally have narrow rungs that are uncomfortable and less safe for the end user. Ergonomically designed profiled rungs for increased safety and comfort for the end user. Sincerely, Patrick Osgood Page 1 of 1 Design Review Board Recommendation 304 Essex Street Small Project Review – Installation of Rooftop Access Ladder Meeting Date: December 16, 2020 Members Present: Paul Durand, Chair, David Jaquith, Glenn Kennedy, Catherine Miller, Marc Perras, Helen Sides, J. Michael Sullivan Members Absent: None Decision: At a regular meeting of the Design Review Board (DRB), upon a motion duly made and seconded, it was unanimously voted to recommend approval of the proposed rooftop access ladder as designed and conditioned herein. Referenced Plans and Documents 1. Plan Set titled ‘Exterior Ladder’, prepared by McBrie, LLC, 797 Turnpike Street, 2nd Floor, North Andover, MA 01845, dated 11/25/19. 2. Ladder Specification Sheet and Plan Drawing, supplied by Fixfast USA, 3921 Perry Boulevard, Whitestown, IN 46075. 3. Communication from Osgood Professional Services confirming black powder coating, dated 12/26/20. 4. Staff Comments dated 12/9/20. Condition of Approval: The DRB recommends incorporating the following condition: 1. Consistency with Approved Design/Plans: Should the applicant determine that the project may not be completed as presented and conditioned herein, he/she/they shall return to the DRB to review proposed modifications prior to making any changes in the field. 2. Color of Ladder: The ladder shall be powder coated black. All of the components to the ladder, including fixtures and the rooftop landing and railings shall be powder coated black. Findings 1. Consistency with Design Standards and Guidelines: This project is consistent with the design guidelines and standards. 2. Sensitivity to Historic Structure: The black ladder will be a more appropriate addition to the building than a silver aluminum ladder. The matte black of the powder coating will blend with the building and complement the building’s existing black details. Signature of the DRB: By the signature below, I certify that this recommendation accurately reflects the actions of the Design Review Board. _______________________________________ _________ Paul Durand Date Chair 12/29/2020
