Lowell, MA 01852 Attn: Ms- Liz Denly. l ! Prepared By: Mitkem Corporation 175 Metro Center Boulevard Warwick, RI 02886 (401) 732-3400 I SDG Narrative Mitkem Corporation submits the enclosed data package in response to TRC Solutions' Flynn-Tan aqueous sample project. Under this deliverable, analysis results are presented for nine samples that were received on June 27, 2005 and logged in under Mitkem Work Order Number D0751. Analyses were performed per instruction in the chain of custody form and per email instructions from the client. For reference, a copy of the Mitkem Work Order form is included for cross-referencing the client sample ID.and laboratory sample ID. i The analyses were performed according to Massachusetts DEP and EPA SW-846 methods, with results presented in a Level 4 format deliverable. The following observation and/or deviations are observed for the following analyses: i 1. Volatile Organic Analyses: Samples were analyzed by Method 8260B. Surrogate standards: four surrogate standards were spiked into each analysis. Surrogate recoveries were within the MADEP and Mitkem QC limits. Mitkem's statistical QC limits listed on the surrogate report form are wider than the MADEP 70%-130% limits for d4-1,2-dichloroethane. Lab control sampleilab control sample duplicate: spike recoveries were within the MADEP 70%- 130% limits as well as the Mitkem statistical QC'limits. Lab fortified blank: a laboratory fortified blank at the 1 ug/L concentration level was analyzed to support a reduced reporting limit for vinyl chloride and 1,1-dichloroethene. Percent recoveries for both compounds were within the QC limits. Sample analysis: the following compounds had%RSD values exceeding 15% in the initial calibration: tetrahydrofuran, 2-hexanone, 1,2,4-trichlorobenzene, hexaehlorobutadiene and naphthalene. This initial calibration meets the acceptance i criteria in the MADEP CAM method document. Percent difference for 1,4-dioxane exceeded 30%in the continuing calibration verification standard V2G9181_ No other unusual occurrences were noted during sample analysis. l 2. MADEP VPH Analysis: Samples were analyzed by VPH Method 1.1. All samples were properly preserved. Surrogate standards: percent recoveries were below the QC timits on both detectors in the initial analysis of sample B-101'and on one detector in the initial analysis of sample MW- 108. These samples were reanalyzed, with improved results, although the recovery remained low on one detector for sample 13-101. The reanalyses were performed one day beyond the holding time. Lab control sample:spike recoveries were within the QC limits for the lab control sample and duplicate lab control sample. Matrix spike/matrix spike duplicate: duplicate matrix spikes were performed on sample MW-101. Percent recoveries and replicate RPD were within the QC limits. Sample analysis: no other unusual occurrences were noted during sample analysis. 3. MADEP EPH Analysis: Samples were extracted by Method 3510C, separatory funnel extraction, and analyzed by EPH Method 04/1.1. Surrogate recovery: recoveries were within the QC limits with the exception of low recovery for one surrogate in MW-101. This sample was refractionated with the same result. Laboratory control sample: spike recoveries in lab control sample were within the QC limits. Recoveries were biased low for the lower boiling point analytes'in the LCS duplicate. The LCSD was refractionated with the same results_ The low recoveries in the LCSD resulted in elevated RPD for the lower boiling compounds the C9-C 14 aliphatic analytes, naphthalene,2-methylnaphthalene and acenaphthene in the LCSD, and RPD for these same analytes plus C16, the C9-C18 Aliphatic range and fluorene. 'The low recoveries and elevated RPD are likely due to overconcentration for the LCSD only, and not due to overall method bias_ Matrix spike/matrix spike duplicate: duplicate matrix spike analyses were performed on sample MW-101. Percent recoveries were within the QC limits with the exception of low recoveries for the aliphatic compounds C.9;C10 and C12 in the MSD_ Replicate RPDs were within the QC limits_ 1 i Sample analysis: a contaminant in the EPH fractionation cartridges was present in the aliphatic and aromatic ranges. The identity of this contaminant has been confirmed by GUMS, and has been subtracted from the appropriate EPH Range results. No other unusual occurrences were noted during sample analysis. 4. Metals Analysis: T Samples were analyzed by method 6010B. Lab control sample: spike recoveries were within the QC limits. Matrix spike: matrix spike analysis was performed on sample MW-107. Spike recoveries were within the QC limits. Duplicate: duplicate analyses were performed on sample MW-107. Replicate RPDs were within the QC limits. Sample analysis: a laboratory fortified blank was analyzed for silver at the 20 ppb concentration to support reporting results to that level. Percent recovery was within the QC limits. No other unusual occurrences were noted during sample analysis.
