Client Project: Flynn-Tan, Salem, Soil Samples 1 Mitkem Project ID: D0703 July 25, 2005 Prepared For: TRC Solutions, Inc. 116 John Street Lowell, MA 01852 Attn: Ms_ Liz Denly j f _ Prepared By: Mitkem Corporation 175 Metro Center Boulevard Warwick, RI 02886 (401) 732-3400 I i f I SDG Narrative Mitkem Corporation submits the enclosed data package in response to TRC Solutions' Flynn-Tan soil sample project. Under this deliverable, analysis results are presented for fourteen samples that were received on June 17,2005 logged in under Mitkem Work . Order Number D0703. Analyses were performed per instruction in the chain of custody form. For reference,a copy of the Mitkem Work Order form is included for cross- referencing the client sample ID and laboratory sample ID. The analyses were performed according to Massachusetts DEP and EPA SW-846 methods, with results presented in a Level 4 format deliverable. The following observation and/or deviations are observed for the following analyses: 1. Volatile Organic Analyses: Samples were analyzed by Method 8260. Soil sample aliquots for low level analysis were received in DI water and preserved by freezing on the day of sample receipt. Surrogate standards: four surrogate standards were spiked into each analysis. Mitkem's statistical QC limits listed on the surrogate report form are wider than the MADEP 70%- 130%limits. Surrogate recoveries were within the MADEP QC limits with the exception of unusually high recoveries for two surrogates each in samples B-107-2-6 and B-907-2-6. These samples were reanalyzed at dilution using the medium-level procedure with improved results. Please note that surrogates were spiked into the-methanol extract. for medium-level VOC analysis rather than into the preserved soil vial. Lab control sample/lab control sample duplicate: spike recoveries were within the Mitkem statistical QC limits and the MADEP 70%-- 130%limits with the exception of methyl-t-butyl ether in both sets of LCS/LCS duplicates. Internal standards: internal standard peak areas were outside of the QC limits in the initial analysis of sample B-907-2-6. j Sample analysis: the following compounds had%RSD values exceeding 15%in the initial calibration:tetrahydrofuran,2-hexanone, 1,2,4-trichlorobenzene, hexachlorobutadiene and naphthalene in.instrument V2 and bromomethane, acetone, methylene chloride, 2-butanone,tetrahydrofuran,see-butylbenzene, 1,2-dichlorobenzene ' and naphthalene in instrument V5. These initial calibrations meet the acceptance criteria in the MADEP CAM method document. The following compounds have%D exceeding 30%in the continuing calibration verification standards: 1,4-dioxane in both V2G9181 and V5G0611 and acetone in V5G0611. The continuing calibrations meet the acceptance criteria in the MADEP CAM method document. No other unusual occurrences were noted during sample analysis. 2. MADEP VPH Analysis: Samples were analyzed by VPH Method 1.1. All samples were properly preserved. Please note that the following samples had more than the 1:1 +/-25%soil to methanol ratio, but all samples were covered by the methanol preservative: B-101-4-8 and 13=102-4- 8. .Surrogate standards:percent recoveries were below the QC limits in all samples with the exception of TRIP BLANK.- These samples were all reanalyzed with similar.results. Lab control sample: spike recoveries and replicate RPD were within the QC limits. Matrix spike/matrix spike duplicate: duplicate matrix.spikes were performed on sample B-110.. 4-8. Spike recoveries and replicate RPDs were within the QC limits. Sample analysis: method blanks contained C5-C8 Aliphatics Range organics above the reporting limit. This is.primarily due to elevated.baseline rather than a pattern of petroleum-related peaks. Where this.analyte is also detected in a sample associated with these blanks, its result is qualified with the"B"flag. No other unusual occurrences were noted during sample analysis. 3. MADEP EPH Analysis: Samples were extracted by Method 3545A,Pressurized Fluid Extraction, and analyzed by EPH Method 04/1.1. Mechanical problems occurred with both the accelerated solvent extractor used for Method 3545A,and with the recirculating chiller used to cool soxhlet condensors, rendering the first two extraction.batches containing these samples unusable.. The samples were successfully extracted one day beyond the holding time for samples B- 102-4-8 and B-110-4-8. Surrogate recovery:recoveries were within the QC limits. Laboratory control sample:_ spike.recoveries were within the QC limits in the lab control sample and duplicate.LCS. Matrix spike/matrix spike duplicate: duplicate matrix spikes were performed on sample B-102-48. Spike recoveries were within the QC limits with the exception of marginally low recovery for nonane, decane and dodecane in the MS. Recoveries for other 1 a • compounds in the MS were biased somewhat lower than in the MSD,resulting in elevated, but still acceptable RPD. Sample analysis:'a contaminant in the EPH fractionation cartridges was present in the aliphatic and aromatic ranges. The identity of this contaminant has been confirmed by GUMS, and has been subtracted from the appropriate EPH Range results. No other unusual occurrences were noted during sample analysis. 4. -PCB Analysis: Samples were extracted by Method 3540C Soxhlet Extraction, and analyzed by Method 8082. Surrogate standards:percent recoveries were within the Mitkem and MADEP QC limits. i Mitkem's statistical QC limits listed on the surrogate report form are slightly different from the MADEP 30%-150%limits. Lab control sample:spike recoveries were within the.QC limits in the LCS and duplicate LCS. Mitkem's statistical QC limits listed on the LCS report form are tighter than the MADEP 400/o-140%limits. Matrix spike/matrix spike duplicate: duplicate matrix spikes were performed on sample B-113-0-3. Spike recoveries and replicate RPDs were within the QC limits. Sample analysis: aroclor 1254 concentrations are reported from the front GC column analysis as percent difference for the continuing calibration verification standard on the rear GC column exceeds 15%. No other unusual occurrences were noted during sample analysis. 5. Metals Analysis: Samples were analyzed by method 6010B. i Lab control sample: spike recoveries were within the QC limits. I Matrix spike: matrix spike analysis was performed on sample B-104-2-4. Spike recoveries were within the QC limits with the exception of low recoveries for antimony, arsenic and zinc. Post-digestion spike was performed with improved recoveries. Results for these elements are qualified with the."N"flag on the data sheets. Duplicate: duplicate analyses were performed on sample B-104-2-4. Replicate were within the QC limits with the exception of aresenic, lead and zinc. Resuts for these elements are qualified with the"*"on the data sheets. Sample analysis: ICP serial dilution analysis was performed on samples F-104-2-4. Percent differences were within the QC limits. No other unusual occurrences were noted during sample analysis. -All pages in this report have been numbered consecutively, starting with the title page and ending with a page saying only"Last Page of Data Report". 1 certify that this data package is in compliance, both technically and for completeness, for other than the conditions detailed above.
