Outline Specifications
General
The intent of this project is to replace the existing failed timber retaining wall with a new mortared
gravity stone retaining wall.
Permits
The contractor shall obtain all necessary permits from the City of Salem. Notify inspectional services at
the specified intervals in order to satisfy the permit requirements for inspections.
Baseline of Wall
The anticipated baseline of the replacement wall is the base of the existing timber retaining wall.The
top of wall in all cases has moved out over the base. It is anticipated that the base of the wall
represents the limit of adverse possession. It appears that the existing timber retaining wall and the
proposed replacement wall are all on the abutter's property. All legal provisions for work performed on
abutter's property must be obtained in writing in advance of the work. Provisions shall include
temporary conditions for their property area affected by construction.
Proposed grade
Grade at the top of the existing wall varies from 6"to 1'-6" below the pool apron. The intent is to raise
the top of wall so that it is flush with the top of the pool apron and level grade extends from the apron
to the retaining wall. The replacement retaining wall will therefore be between 6"and 1'-6"taller than
the existing failed timber retaining wall.
Vertical and Horizontal Controls
The contractor shall maintain all vertical and horizontal controls. The elevations in the drawing set are
based on rough field measurements and shall not control the final wall configuration. As noted above,
the base of the wall is to be the base of the existing timber wall,which is not displaced from its original
position,and the top of wall is to be the top of concrete pool apron.The exception is when the wall is
away from the pool apron,where it may step down to accommodate existing grade.
Soil
Soil conditions may include natural soil,fill material, and ledge. Wherever fill material is encountered it
must be overexcavated and replaced in 8" lifts compacted to 95%maximum density. All unsuitable soils
such as organics shall be removed and replaced with well graded structural fill.The presumptive bearing
capacity of the soil is 1.5 TSF(3,000 psf),and must be verified by qualified personnel during
construction.
Pool
The existing pool behind the replacement retaining wall must be empty during the construction of the
retaining wall. In no case shall excavations encroach on the base of the existing pool construction at a
1:2 (vert/horizontal)slope from the outside corner of the pool. Any undermining of the pool base will
require concrete underpinning.
Protect the pool apron from loss of support due to excavations. If excavations undermine pool apron,
remove and replace the apron in kind.

Cap
The replacement retaining wall must be provided with a cap to prevent water ingress into the retaining
wall stonework.The cap may consist of large stones, a parged and control jointed topping,or a precast
concrete cap. Submit proposed top of wall cap to engineer for his review and approval. Cap must
incorporate base of new fencing,whether cyclone,or wood posted fencing.
Trees
Existing trees are in direct proximity to the replacement retaining wall. Consult neighbor and arborist
for partial or full removal of trees. There must be no tree remnants under the replacement retaining
wall footing including exclusion of the tree's root system.Where tree roots must be excavated to
remove portions within the retaining wall footing, remove all loose soil and replace with compacted
structural fill placed in 8" loft and compacted to 95%maximum density.
Retaining Wall Construction
See full project specification section 04600, "Gravity Stone Wall Retaining System,"for additional project
requirements. Do not deviate from the project specification without specific consultation and
authorization by the engineer.

SECTION 04600—GRAVITY STONE WALL RETAINING SYSTEM
PART 1 - GENERAL
DESCRIPTION
Work includes furnishing and installing a coursed gravity stone retaining wall to be installed to
the lines and grades designated on the project's final construction drawings or as directed by
the Engineer.Included here are the standards of coursed gravity stone wall construction, as
they should be shown on the construction drawings.
1.02 RELATED SECTIONS
A. Section 02220—Earthwork
1.03 DEFINITIONS:
A. A Gravity Stone Retaining Wall is a mass gravity stone wall and relies on the mass of the
stones, mortar bond, and the friction between the stone and subgrade to retain soil.
B. Terminology for Gravity Stone Walls as used in these specifications:
1. Footing: The prepared surface on which the wall is built
2. Foundation Stones: Large Stones in the bottom of the wall, forming the first course.
3. Lift: A portion of wall vertically above or below a course with through stones. The
First Lift Starts on top of the foundation stones and goes up to the first course of
through stones. The second lift is the next in height and so on. The number of lifts
is determined by the height of the wall.
4. Through Stones: Long stones used to tie the face of the wall back to the stones
behind. Through stones are typically placed in level courses with a specified
horizontal distance between them.The courses of through stones define the top
and bottom of the lifts.
5. Wall Stones: Stones seen in the face of the completed wall.
6. Backing Stones: Stones used behind the face stones to add mass and structure to
the wall.
7. Pinning: Stones precisely placed to wedge wall stones in place.
8. Hearting: Stones used to fill voids between wall stones, backing stones, and
pinning stones.
9. Cap Stones: Stones that make up the top course of the wall, covering the top of the
final lift.
10. Top of Wall Width:Is defined by the top of the Cap Stones
11. Batter: Angle that the face of wall leans back. Typically described in a ratio of
'distance back' to 'height' such as 1:6.
