• Elizabeth Gagakis went on a volunteer `learn and serve' trip to El Salvador (Feb to work
• with the Salvadoran Association for Rural Health(http://www.asaprosar.org/),
ASAPROSAR works with the poor in El Salvador in a number of different ways to improve
their quality of life. They operate a variety of programs, many of which are geared towards
women and children. ASAPROSAR runs before and after school programs for children in
poor urban neighborhoods where gang activity is high and children often do not finish or
even attend school. Going to the Barefoot Angels programs provides children with
educational enrichment, a safe place to learn and have fun and a meal or snack, which in
some cases is their only food for the day. In rural settings, ASAPROSAR works with
extremely poor families to build cooking facilities separate from their living areas, get them
water filtration systems and build latrines. These simple things we take for granted (healthy
cooking facilities, safe water, safe sewage disposal) go a long way in protecting the health
and safety of the people in these communities and changes their lives; there was a hepatitis A
outbreak in one community several years ago because their water is contaminated with
sewage. Thanks to ASAPROSAR's work the risk of that happening again is decreasing.
These are just a few examples of the many things ASAPROSAR does for the people of E1
Salvador: they also run health and eye clinics, do early intervention-type work with very
young children, run microcredit loan programs for women to enable them to start small
businesses, run youth groups for older children, do nutrition and environmental education
and more. El Salvador is a beautiful country with a painful history they are still recovering
• from and working through. Elizabeth is extremely grateful for this opportunity to visit and
learn from the amazing people at ASAPROSAR.
