October 2, 2012 Media Contact: 256-847-2212 LOCAL RESPONDER ATTENDS HOMELAND SECURITY TRAINING Emergency Responder Justina Polvere from The Salem Board of Health, recently completed training offered by the Center for Domestic Preparedness (CDP), in Anniston, Ala. The CDP is operated by the United States Department of Homeland Security's Federal Emergency Management Agency and is the only federally-chartered Weapons of Mass Destruction(WMD)training facility in the nation. The training I received at the CDP is like nothing I have ever experienced before. The initial 3 days I focused on learning how to prepare for an influenza pandemic its the Pandemic Planning and Preparedness (12-07 P3) course. There and throughout my trainings I met so many responders from all over the country, and that in itself was an amazing learning experience. Working together as a team, the class was able to act out and respond to such an outbreak.I was able to learn the many roles of persons that would be involved in such a circumstance. The information I learned is extremely valuable to my position as the Public Health Nurse here in Salem,Ma, and I now feel better prepared and ready if such real life events ever occurred. • My training at the CDP was completed with a hands-on training inside the COBRA facility where I was taught how to wear protective gear suitable to protect me against some of the most toxic chemicals in the world. Succeeding through this course has made me feel confident that if we were ever faced with a biological attack I would be ready and eager to respond.I look forward to future trainings at the CDP and the wealth of knowledge and experience they have to offer me. The CDP develops and delivers advanced training for emergency response providers, emergency managers, and other government officials from state, local, and tribal governments. The CDP offers more than 50 training courses focusing on incident management, mass casualty response, and emergency response to a catastrophic natural disaster or terrorist act. Training at the CDP campus is federally funded at no cost to state, local, and tribal emergency response professionals or their agency. Resident training at the CDP includes healthcare and public health courses at the Noble Training Facility, the nation's only hospital dedicated to training healthcare professionals in disaster preparedness and response. A number of resident training courses culminate at the CDP's Chemical, Ordnance, Biological and Radiological Training Facility(COBRA). The COBRA is the nation's only facility featuring civilian training exercises in a true toxic environment using chemical agents and nonpathogenic biological materials. The advanced hands-on training enables responders to effectively prevent, respond to, and recover from real-world incidents involving acts of terrorism and other hazardous materials. Responders participating in CDP training gain critical skills and confidence to respond effectively to local • incidents or potential WMD events. Information about CDP training programs can be found at http://cdp.dhs.gov. Visit the"News&Media"tab at the top of the site to download images, share CDP training articles, and find out what others are saying about CDP training. From: Board of Health Members Dr. Barbara Poremba,Chair,Dr.Larissa Lucas, Gayle Sullivan, Robert Dionne,Martin Fair Re: Reduction in Number of BOH Members Date: 21 September 2012 Dear Councilors, The BOH is requesting a reduction in the size of the board from 7 members to 5 members. This is in keeping with other boards, most of whom are 3 members. • Historically, the size of the board was increased to 7 members when the city also was overseeing a chronic disease hospital. Since this is no longer the case, the board would like to reduce its size. This request comes from the board and is unanimous. Please do not hesitate to contact any/all of the members if you have any questions or need further clarification. We greatly appreciate your consideration of our request.
