(SIMMONS), personnel observed the removal of a 1,000 gallon'#2 fuel oil underground storage tank (UST) at the above referenced property. - Lieutenant Erin. Griffin, . Fire Prevention Officer of the Salem Fire Department, was onsitefor inspection of the UST and its removal Stephan Landry, Hydrogeologist of SIMMONS, was onsite to observe the subsurface conditions and collect soil samples for petroleum hydrocarbon screening as part of contamination assessment required by the. State Fire Marshal's Office. Construction Solutions Inc. (CSI) in association with H&S Tank performed the UST removal, cleaning, and offsite disposal activities. The subsurface geology consisted of medium brown, fine to medium sand. As shown on the UST Removal Plan, the UST was 4'.in diameter by 10'-8" long and was situated in the front (west side) landscaped area of the single family house. The top of the UST was between 1=2 feet below surface grades. Upon removal, the UST was noted in good condition. There were no holes or oil staining observed along any of the sides or bottom of the UST. No oil staining or petroleum odors were observed in the UST excavation. The UST was subsequently transported offsite for disposal by CSI to Turners Salvage facility (state tank yard #002) in Lynn, MA After removal, soil samples were collected from four sidewalls (north, east, south; and west) and bottom of the excavation. Groundwater was not present in the excavation. The soil samples were placed in 8 oz. soil jars, covered with aluminum foil, shaken, allowed to equilibrate for approximately 10 minutes to ambient .temperature, shaken again, and then screened for headspace using a pre -calibrated HNu Photoionization Detector (PID) model 101 (10.2 eV). The headspace results, as summarized in the following table, ranged from 0.0 to 0.4 parts per million by volume (pprnv) \\Serverl\simnions2\101004\UST Closure Report.doc • .. 213 Elm Street Salisbury, MA 01952 978-463-6669 info@simmons2le.com SIMMONS Environmental Services, Inc. One soil sample from the bottom and each of the sidewalls were then analyzed onsite for total petroleum hydrocarbons (TPHs) using a turbidmetric test called :PetroFLAGTM by the Dexsil Corporation. This test accurately quantifies the concentration in ppm of .fuel oil range hydrocarbons in soiL As shown in the table below, the results of the PetroFLAG© tests detected 0 to 25 parts per million (ppmv) of total petroleum hydrocarbons (TPHs) in the sidewalls arid bottom samples. PID TPH by PetroFLAGTM Location : (ppmv) (ppm) North Wall ._ 0.0 0 East Wall . , 0.2 8 SouthWall 0.2 9 West Wall 0.0 0 Bottom _ 0.4 25 Since no concentrations of petroleum hydrocarbons were detected above the headspace notification threshold of 100 ppmv as lusted in 310 CMR 40.0313(2), nor was a Reportable Concentration RCS-1 for total petroleum hydrocarbon (TPH) limit of 1,000 milligrams per kilogram (mg/Kg) or ppm exceeded, no further actions are warranted.
