Applicant's Description Dear members of the Salem Historical Commission:
of Work:
The North Pine Condo Association (7, 9, 11 & 13 North Pine Street, Units 1 & 2) request
a Certificate of Non-Applicability from the Salem Historical Commission for the following
repair(s) to be made to: Areas of the front- facing, exterior Mansard roof; repairs to the
flat Bay and Entry-way roofs of each unit on the front-facing exterior of the dwelling.
The Condo Association has met with J.B. Kidney & Co., Inc., a 4th Generation family
owned and operated business based out of Salem, Mass. They have a level of

expertise and knowledge of the historic slate work seen throughout the City's historic
neighborhood's and have come highly recommended. With this, we are assured that the
repairs and/or replacement made to the historic Mansard slate roof will be done using in
kind materials that retain the architectural detailing, integrity of style, color, dimension
and texture of the original slate roof tiles. Based on the assessment of the scope of
work required on the Mansard roof by J.B. Kidney & Co., Inc. approximately 70 slate
roof tiles will need to be repaired and/or replaced.
The work done on the Bay and Entry-way roofs require correctly installing flashing at the
edges of the roofline that abut the exterior front-facing facade of the dwelling. This
process will require the temporary removal of two courses of clapboard. If the existing
clapboard has retained its integrity it will simply be put back in its original place. If the
clapboard needs to be replaced this too will be done using in kind materials that
retain the architectural detailing, integrity of style, color, dimension and texture of the
current cedar clapboards. The edge of these roof will terminate with a custom copper
edge cleat.
