CERTIFICATE OF HARDSHIP HCCH-21-1
It is hereby certified that the Salem Historical Commission has determined that the proposed:
Type of Work: Painting
as described below will be appropriate to the preservation of said Historic District,as per the requirements set forth in the Historic
District's Act(M.G.L.Ch.4oC)and the Salem Historic Districts Ordinance.
District: Derby Street
Address of Property: 110 DERBY STREET, U1, SALEM, MA 01970
Name of Owner at time of Submission: BARTON PAMELA JOY
Applicant's Description of Work:The fence at 110 was replaced in 2019 after a storm. We went through the Historical Commission
approval process for the replacement. After the fence was installed the installers coated it with a clear seal.
At that time the association was unaware that we were required to obtain consent for a clear seal and we were unaware that the
Historical Commission wanted the fence to be left unsealed.Mea Culpa.
The purpose of the clear seal was and is to protect the fence from the elements and prolong its lifespan.
We have recently-June 2021-become aware that fence seal was not approved by the Historical Commission.
Since being made aware of the error, the condo Association has reached out to a couple of house painting companies to obtain an
estimate of the cost to stain the fence.
The Association does not currently have the funds to have the fence stained.
We would like to request that the fence be allowed to remain the same color until it needs to be stained,at which point the
Association will reach out to the Historical Commission and agree the fence color.
Attached is a photo of the fence that was submitted at the time of the application and also a photo of the fence
post staining.
