Evaluate the characteristics of this building in terms of other buildings within the community. Both window and door openings have been altered on this building leaving only its size and massing to suggest its Federal identity to the discerning eye. This 3-story, rectangular, 4 x 3-bay, brick store has a full-width, 2-story, shed-roofed, rear ell with open, exterior stairway. In the nineteenth century, an additional, 1-story, half-width section extended to the north boundary of the lot to reach Becket Avenue. At the end of the nineteenth century, the commercial space of the main block incorporated 2 store fronts which in 1906 housed a restaurant and paint shop. "Now the first floor of both brick and frame sections is combined into one commercial area. On the main block, fenestration includes both wooden, 6/6, double-hung sash and vinyl-clad, 1/1, double-hung sash on the third floor. Paired windows are set slightly off center on both upper levels of the facade. On the first floor, aluminum, 3/3, commercial sash has been installed. The main entry is an aluminum, commercial glass door. The frame, rear section of the building has 6/6, double-hung sash with molded trim. A single, rear-wall chimney remains on the western end of the north wall of the main block. HISTORICAL NARRATIVE X See continuation sheet. Discuss the history of the building. Explain its associations with local (or state history. Include uses of the building and the role(s) the owners/occupants played within the community. Title research by Ruth Burnaby of Historic Salem Inc. traces this property to Benjamin Whittier and Nathan Blood who in February 25, 1807 paid $560 to Nathaniel Weston of Salem for this lot on the corner of Derby and Becket Streets (Bk. 181; Pg. 58). The next year, Nathan Blood sold the lot and a store thereon to Moses Little, physician of Lynn for $2,000 (Bk. 185; Pg. 118). Moses Little married Elizabeth Williams (bap. May 8, 1774), the daughter of Captain George Williams, a master mariner, merchant and representative. Stephen White (date not noted) inherited the property from Moses Little and in December 29, 1825 sold the brick store back to Nathan Blood (Bk. 241; Pg. 31) for $2,400. Stephen White was a man of some local prominence. In 1826, he was one of twelve residents of Salem who together donated a total of $19,000 toward the foundation of a society for the promotion of theological education at Harvard College. Stephen White donated $50. Within a few months on April 12, 1826, Nathan Blood sold the brick store to Chandler Flagg (Bk. 240; P_-__>5). In 1833, William P. Goodhue, bought the land and store from Chandler Flagg for $2,000 (Bk. 31; Pg. 31). Goodhue, a ship chandler, grocer and commission merchant operated here though 1878 though the property apparently passed from Goodhue to the Salem Five Cent Savings Bank in 1874 (Bk. 900; Pg. 123). Albert P. Goodhue, son of William, and a former clerk for his father, continued to run a ship chandlery here until c. 1886. BIBLIOGRAPHY and/or REFERENCES X See continuation sheet. Recommended for listing in the National Register of Historic Places; If checked, see attached National Register Criteria Statement form. INVENTORY FORM CONTINUATION SHEET Salem 82 Derby Street Area HO Form No. 3298 HISTORICAL NARRATIVE (continued) In 1887, John Ganey, purchased the store from the bank (Bk. 1191; Pg. 276). The store was vacant for a couple of years until the Bovox Company, manufacturers of patent medicine operated here between 1895 and 1898. The store was vacant again for several years until 1904 when Benjamin B. Hersey, (also a bicycle repairer at 2 Essex Street) and George A. Brackett ran the Bay State Barrel Co., here for one year. They were succeeded by several other short term operations: Frederick E. Johnson and Co., also a barrel dealer, in 1905, William F. Carr, a painter and paper hanger, in 1907-08; Maurice A. McDonald, who ran a lunch room and pool room 1909-1910 and Boleslaw Soboczinski who operated a pool room and Stanislaw Klosinsky, a hairdresser in 1911. On October 28, 1911, John Ganey sold the brick store and the adjacent house at 78 Derby Street (see Form No. 3299) to Felix Rybicki (Bk. 2112; Pg. 54). After 1921, Rybicki sold the house next door and lived here where he ran a grocery and clothing store with Wladyslaw Rybicki (relationship unknown) for several years until the latter moved to Manchester, New Hampshire. Felix Rybicki then continued on his own. After the death of her husband c. 1937, Catherine Rybicki incorporated Rybicki Inc. Provisions with two women, as additional officers, Casimira Swiniarski, vice president, and Chessie F. Kowalski, secretary. These other women were also tenants at 82 Derby Street. Rybicki Inc. continued in operation until 1958 when Katherine E. Rybicki sold to Joseph R. and Stephen C. Ingemi (Bk. 4446; Pg. 406), owner and clerk at Steve's Quality Market at 37 Margin Street.
