The Massachusetts Historical Commission (MHC) has converted this paper record to digital format as part of ongoing
projects to scan records of the Inventory of Historic Assets of the Commonwealth and National Register of Historic
Places nominations for Massachusetts. Efforts are ongoing and not all inventory or National Register records related to
this resource may be available in digital format at this time.
The MACRIS database and scanned files are highly dynamic; new information is added daily and both database
records and related scanned files may be updated as new information is incorporated into MHC files. Users should
note that there may be a considerable lag time between the receipt of new or updated records by MHC and the
appearance of related information in MACRIS. Users should also note that not all source materials for the MACRIS
database are made available as scanned images. Users may consult the records, files and maps available in MHC's
public research area at its offices at the State Archives Building, 220 Morrissey Boulevard, Boston, open M-F, 9-5.

BUILDING FORM 13 Lynn Street, Salem
ARCHITECTURAL DESCRIPTION see continuation sheet
Describe architectural features. Evaluate the characteristics of this building in terms of other buildings within the
community.
This is a 3 1/2 story, modest, 19th-century residence, which has been altered. The main block is rectangular in
plan, four bays wide by three deep, with a side gable roof and a south facing entry. There is an ell at the northwest
corner. This building seems to have unusually tall proportions, that seem a bit awkward. It has been sided with
two-tone vinyl siding and the windows have 2/2 wood sash with exterior storms. The facade has asymmetrical
fenestration but the entrance is centered. The only architectural feature remaining is a Victorian door hood
supported on carved brackets with drop pendants. The main entrance door has lower wood panels and an upper.
4-light glazed panel and is topped by an entablature. A 20th c. casement window has been installed in a smaller
opening in the west bay of the facade. A small brick interior chimney on the south slope of the roof does not
appear to be original. There is a steep drop at the rear of the site toward Bridge Street and the full basement is
exposed at the rear (N). The north elevation has a full width, three-story enclosed porch, which has bands of 1/1
windows at each story and vinyl siding. The ell, which is visible from Bridge Street, has a gable roof and is three
stories at the rear. A gable addition sits on top of the ell roof. An entrance with a simple surround is centered at
the basement level of the ell, facing Bridge Street. The ell appears on the 1874 map, and the porch was probably
added in the 20th century.
The 2/2 sash and the Victorian door hood would suggest this had been an Italianate building or at least that it
dated to about that period. It is not clear, because of subsequent alterations, whether this was an earlier building
that was upgraded at that time or whether an earlier building was demolished to build this structure.
HISTORICAL NARRATIVE see continuation sheet
Discuss the history of the building. Explain its associations with local (or state) history. Include uses of the
building and the role(s) the owners/occupants played within the community^
The 1837 city directory lists Benjamin Glover, painter, and Nathaniel Morse, saddler, living at 13 Lynn Street. By
1846, Morse had moved to West Place, but Glover was still listed at this address. A Somes N. Larrabee, a shoe
manufacturer at Sewall, was listed as living at 13 Lynn, rear in 1846. This may have referred to a second house on
this lot that later was number 23 River Street. The 1851 map shows a building located at the site of the present
building at 13 Lynn. On the 1874 map, John Morgan is shown as the owner of the building at this address.
Morgan, a laborer, was living here by 1864 and remained until the 1880s. In 1884, several boarders were listed as
living at this address, along with John Morgan. By 1897, the owner was William H. Morgan, a letter carrier. He
also lived here with several boarders. The 1897 directory also lists a vacant store at this address which is listed
again as vacant in 1900, but does not appear on the listing for this address in 1905. By 1910, the property was
owned by M. & I. Collier, who occupied the building with several boarders. M. Collier's occupation was listed as a
cigar manufacturer and his company, Witch City Cigar Co., was listed at 13 Lynn Street In addition, one tenant,
S. Solanch, operated a variety store at 21 River Street, which was the address at the rear of the ell. In 1931, 1950
and 1970, the building appears to have been occupied as a rooming house or apartments, with between three and
five residents listed. The building continues to be occupied as multi-family housing.
