Efforts are ongoing and not all inventory or National Register records related to this resource may be available in digital format at this time. The MACRIS database and scanned files are highly dynamic; new information is added daily and both database records and related scanned files may be updated as new information is incorporated into MHC files. Users should note that there may be a considerable lag time between the receipt of new or updated records by MHC and the appearance of related information in MACRIS. Users should also note that not all source materials for the MACRIS database are made available as scanned images. Users may consult the records, files and maps available in MHC's public research area at its offices at the State Archives Building, 220 Morrissey Boulevard, Boston, open M-F, 9-5. COMM. BUILDING FORM 8 Lynn Street Salem ARCHITECTURAL DESCRIPTION see continuation sheet Describe architectural features. Evaluate the characteristics of this building in terms of other buildings within the community. This is a modest 2 1/2 story Federal style house, which is common in the district and similar examples are found nearby on Anderson and River Streets. It is sheathed in wood clapboard, and is rectangular in plan, 5 bays wide by 2 bays deep, with a side gable roof pierced by two interior brick chimneys on the east slope and a metal heating stack on the west slope. The symmetrical facade, which faces west on Lynn Street, features a central entry with a trabeated surround made of flush panels and a wood panel door framed by sidelights. The windows are set in simple molded surrounds and have 6/6 sash. An enclosed wooden bulkhead on the north elevation sits on a brick foundation. There is a secondary entrance on the east elevation with a flat surround and one rectangular window, both appear to be later alterations. The building sits at the sidewalk along Lynn and Andover Streets and there is a parking space paved with granite pavers to the north of the house. The yard east of the parking space is enclosed by a wood fence on the west and a chain link fence to the east. HISTORICAL NARRATIVE see continuation sheet Discuss the history of the building. Explain its associations with local (or state) history. Include uses of the building and the role(s) the owners/occupants played within the community. 8 Lynn Street was constructed circa 1802 for William Boden, a mariner. This parcel of land was originally part of the Beckford family landholdings. A portion of that land was purchased and then subdivided by Benjamin Goodhue, who sold a parcel to William Boden in 1783. Boden served in the Revolutionary War and built a small house here following his return. According to HSI research of deed and tax assessments, it is likely that a larger house was later constructed here probably about 1802. Following Boden's death in 1807, his wife, Experience Boden, was granted the northern half of the "mansion house." She owned the property until 1815 when it was sold to her mortgagor, James Bott. It is unclear who inherited the southern portion of the mansion house. Bott granted her lifetime use of the northern half of the house with right of way access to the stairs, outhouse and cellar for the rent of 1 cent per year. Experience Boden lived here until her death in 1838 at the age of 90. Since James Bott predeceased Mrs. Boden, the property was inherited by Bott's grandchildren. William Bott, a currier, purchased his siblings' shares and lived here until 1850. The property was then sold to Jonathan Perkins, who rented the house out and then sold it to John Flanagan in 1855. Flanagan lived here with his family and boarders, all working in the leather industry. The Flanagan family owned the property until 1874 when it was sold to Michael McCarthy, also a leather industry worker. The McCarthy family lived here until 1876, when they built the house at 12 Andover Street and then they leased this property to tenants. The property remained in the McCarthy family until 1953.
