Timeless and current appeal
The mariner Jonas Adams built our home in 1740 -not in its current location but at 339 Essex Street , the site of
the Salem Athenaeum. Apparently, it was a tavern for a s pell circa 1794 called "Sign of the Eagle ." Estimates
suggest that the house was moved to Botts Court during the second half of the 19th century. Having recently
moved into the home, we are excited to refresh 7 Botts Court in a way that both honors its long history and
enhances its present day appeal within the neighborhood. Our color choices are largely consistent with the colonial
period , and they include the 19th century variations of lighter trim and darker shutters. Also , we will replace the
storm windows -to improve both the home's appearance and its thermal efficiency. Looking ahead, we plan to
remove the foundation's concrete coating to reveal and restore the brick within the next year. Taken together, we
feel these improvements will emphasize the home 's historic attributes and preserve its health for many years to
come.
Our consultant , Dawn MacBumie of Waters and Brown guided us through to process of color selection. The
following pages document existing conditions and the details of our plans , including paint chips and a sample of
our storm windows.
