The Massachusetts Historical Commission (MHC) has converted this paper record to digital format as part of ongoing
projects to scan records of the Inventory of Historic Assets of the Commonwealth and National Register of Historic
Places nominations for Massachusetts. Efforts are ongoing and not all inventory or National Register records related to
this resource may be available in digital format at this time.
The MACRIS database and scanned files are highly dynamic; new information is added daily and both database
records and related scanned files may be updated as new information is incorporated into MHC files. Users should
note that there may be a considerable lag time between the receipt of new or updated records by MHC and the
appearance of related information in MACRIS. Users should also note that not all source materials for the MACRIS
database are made available as scanned images. Users may consult the records, files and maps available in MHC's
public research area at its offices at the State Archives Building, 220 Morrissey Boulevard, Boston, open M-F, 9-5.

BUILDING FORM 170 Federal Street
ARCHITECTURAL DESCRIPTION See continuation sheet.
Describe architectural features. Evaluate the characteristics of this building in terms of other buildings
within the community.
This two-and-a-half-story, three-bay, center-entry, hip-roofed house is three
bays deep and is set on a high stone basement. A one story ell is attached to
the rear. Central emphasis is created by the segmented-arched recessed entry
with a large, highly-ornamented overdoor on scroll brackets supporting a
rectangular bay window above it at the second floor level.
This house is notable for its profuse, high-quality ornament in the Italianate
style. Italianate features include the square-plan, hip roof, broad,
bracketed eaves with a shaped frieze and linked-arch-with-dentil ornament,
projecting cornice window caps on brackets, cornice with lunette window caps
on brackets, faux ashlar wood facade and corner quoins. An outstanding
Italianate element is the elaborate overdoor with pendants on large, heavy,
scroll brackets and highly-ornamented bracketed eaves. Part of the same
element is the rectangular bay window above it with panelled pilasters, Roman
arched windows with keystones, and the same richly-ornamented, eave cornice as
seen on the overdoor.
HISTORICAL NARRATIVE See continuation sheet.
Discuss the history of the building. Explain its associations with local (or state history. Include uses
of the building and the role(s) the owners/occupants played within the community.
The James Braden House is located on upper Federal Street which developed as a
residential neighborhood in the early and mid-nineteenth century. Many of the
residents were tanners and curriers in the nearby leather district on
Boston Street. During the early nineteenth century, Salem's shoe and leather
industry expanded rapidly, becoming the dominant manufacturing concern by the
late industrial period.
Around 1867, James Braden built this Italianate house at 170 Federal Street on
a plot which at the time bordered the North River. The new house was
constructed on the site of an older dwelling. In 1868, the house was valued
at $8,000, a considerable amount in this neighborhood of modest houses.
Braden had lived at 169 Federal Street for several years (see Form No. 651)
before building his new house. He was a tanner and currier who developed a
successful company located at 67 Boston Street. A prominent member of the
community, Braden served on the Board of.Directors at the Merchants National
Bank. After James Braden's death in 1895, Braden's widow moved out of
the house.
