13 Warren Street Bldg dept and structural engineer letters CITY OF SALEM, MASSACHUSETTS BUILDING DEPARTMENT 120 WASHINGTON STREET,3'D FLOOR TEL: 978-745-9595 KIMBERLEY DRISCOLL FAX: 978-740-9846 MAYOR THOMAS ST.PIERRE DIRECTOR OF PUBLIC PROPERTIES/BUILDING CONMUSSIONER January 31,2017 Salem Historic Commission Salem City Hall 93 Washington Street Salem,Massachusetts 01970 RE: 13 Warren Street Chimney Stack Jessica Herbert-Chairperson, Our Department recently performed a visual structural inspection of the above referenced location on Monday,January 30,2017. The inspection was performed to evaluate the overall condition of the two (2)—story brick masonry chimney stack at 13 Warren Street located on the left side of the dwelling. We were called to the site to review the masonry structure because of the crumbling brick and failing masonry joints. The brick units and its joints at the second-floor level have completely failed and have collapsed inside the chimney stack itself. In conclusion based on our findings it is this Departments opinion that the chimney should be demolished immediately. The chimney stack has come to the end of its 166-year useful life span and the current condition could result in a collapse on the adjacent property. Structural engineer (Gregory Novak, at Structures North) inspected the subject chimney and stated that its second floor portion poses a serious safety hazard, and requires a complicated and expensive temporary bracing/support, should this be an attempt to rebuild the structure. Masonry contractor (Justin Epstein Masonry) visited the site and after brief observation refused to work in such dangerous conditions to repair it. Please observe attached photographs. Respectfully, MichalSzydlowski PionarchLLC.
