Subject: Re:application for 262 Lafayette St - reroof
Hi, Patti!
I apologize for not using the correct terminology in our application; I didn't have a copy of the association's 1998
application. Our goal is an in-kind replacement of 3-tab red asphalt shingles; we want the roof to look exactly the same.
Thank you!
Best wishes,
Kate Dacey

Kate,
I received your application today to reroof the building at 262 Lafayette Street. Can you please clarify
the type of asphalt shingles to be used for the work. In 1998, the Commission approved in-kind
replacement of the roofing shingles, which were 3-tab asphalt shingles. If you would like to replace
the current roof with a 3-tab shingle in either red (to match existing), black or charcoal gray, then a
Certificate of Non-Applicability can be issued. If you are proposing to change the roof to an
architectural shingle, this would constitute a change and would require a public hearing
process. Please give me a call at 978-619-5685 if you have any questions.
Thank you,
Patti

The roof on our building is nearly 20 years old,and is showing signs of wear.We have lost shingles in recent wind
storms, and have suffered water damage as well.To prevent further damage to the building,we have hired Shea
Roofing Company to replace the current roof. If our application is approved,we anticipate beginning work in
September 2017.
We do not intend to modify the roofline or make any structural changes to the roof; our goal is simply to replace
the shingles and repair damage to the roofs support structure. We will be using the same GAF architectural
shingles that were used when the roof was last redone (ca. 1999).
1 am enclosing a more detailed statement from the contractor about the nature and extent of the repairs.I am also
enclosing photographs of the roof taken from Lafayette and Laurel Streets. Given the height of the building and the
relatively small roof area,it was difficult to fully capture the extent of the damage on film. My contact information
is below if the Commission requires any additional information from the Bates House Association to approve our
request.Thank you.

Hi Kate. Mary and Bill,
Attached is the three pictures I took of the rotted wood and hole in the roof. When trying to open it
up to repair it I found that the rot extended over to the flashing wall of the dormer. It was starting to
snow a that point so I decided to just stop opening it up and instead put a temporary patch on the
hole and come back to it in better weather. It appears that the vent has been leaking for some time in
order to create that type of rot. From first look it appears the boards above the vent are dry. I will try
to be there tomorrow and remove the rotted,re-board then re-shingle over same area.I will also give
you a more detailed assessment of the rest of the roof. If you have any questions or concerns please
feel free to contact me.
