9-2-20 CERTS - 34 Broad Street - building renovations Salem Historical Commission 98 WASHINGTON STREET, SALEM, MASSACHUSETTS 01970 (978) 619-5685 CERTIFICATE OF APPROPRIATENESS It is hereby certified that the Salem Historical Commission has determined that the proposed:  Construction  Moving  Reconstruction √ Alteration  Demolition  Painting  Signage  Other work as described below will be appropriate to the preservation of said Historic District, as per the requirements set forth in the Historic District's Act (M.G.L. Ch. 40C) and the Salem Historic Districts Ordinance. District: McIntire Address of Property: 34 Broad Street Name of Record Owner: Raquel Frisch Description of Approval of Work: o Reinstall black shutters on building façade; o Replace deteriorated wood gutter on right/east side of building with K-style aluminum gutter to be painted to match existing trim color. Downspouts to remain in existing locations; o Replace existing skylight with new 5” high, 21” x 37” C04 Velux skylight in black; o Install two (2) 21” x 37” C04 Velux skylights: 1) at rear of west roof slope; and 2) on east roof slope as far back from front edge of roof as possible; o Remove existing chimney and install faux chimney above roofline to match dimensions, details, brick and mortar color and overall appearance of existing chimney. Applicant to submit detailed drawing of faux chimney to Commission for review and approval prior to the issuance of a building permit for chimney removal; o Remove wood and metal post at end of driveway; o Replace deteriorated wood lattice with new wood lattice in square design; o Install attic vent on rear elevation to be painted to match color of house; o Install new vent stack on east slope of roof. Stack to be covered with copper sleeve; o Install two (2) exhaust fans on east elevation. Fans to be painted to match house color and located above first and second story windows on second bay of fenestration, as close as possible to existing electrical conduit; o Install new furnace vent under porch on rear of building (not visible from a public way named in the district); o Rebuild three-story rear porch with wood posts and railings and composite decking to match existing design details except for height of handrail. Porch to be painted to match existing color. Decking to match existing gray color. New porch balustrade to have secondary handrail to comply with building code height requirement per attached photos. o NOTE: Following items are not under Commission jurisdiction: mailboxes and street numbers. Upon completion of work, please notify Historical Commission staff for final review and sign-off of Certificate. All work commenced must be completed within one year from this date unless otherwise indicated. THIS IS NOT A BUILDING PERMIT.
