The owners of the two units request approval for a change of paint color. The original color of the house is
unknown, as no exterior wood is believed to remain from 1729. The current color scheme is a pale, slightly
greenish yellow with the trim a somewhat darker yellow green. Earlier 20th-century photos suggest perhaps a
medium gray. The house has long been in need of repainting. The owners are proposing changing to a warm,
slightly brownish red, with the same color on both siding and trim. The exact color is C2-069. The choice of color
is the result of several factors, but chief among them was consideration of the current colors of the other houses on
this portion of Essex Street, which consist generally of muted grays, blues, yellows and tans, as well as white and a
few brick buildings. While these colors are both handsome and historically appropriate, in this context we believe
red is a good choice for variety and complementarity. (If there were another red house on this part of the street,we
would likely be proposing a different color.) There are at least 6 historic houses in the McIntire that are currently
red, all of which appear to be different shades. Ours would in turn differ from all of those by being a bit warmer.
The house with the closest red is 1 Andover Street. The tradition of red houses in this area, and in New England in
general,is well established,as is the custom of using the color on both siding and trim. The accompanying pages
contain photos of the red houses in the McIntire and of relevant examples elsewhere. We are proposing a dull satin
finish paint, not high-gloss. The new front door, which will be made of quarter-sawn white oak,we are proposing
to fume with ammonia(which darkens the wood)and finish with a satin natural finish.
