HIST. uuMfvi. I- I BUILDING FORM 113 Federal Street, Salem ARCHITECTURAL DESCRIPTION see continuation sheet Describe architectural features. Evaluate the characteristics of this building in terms of other buildings within the community. 113 Federal Street is an excellent example of a three-story Federal style residence, one of several in the Mclntire district and somewhat more detailed but extremely compatible with a row of three similar structures directly across the street at 108-110. 112-114 and 116-118 Federal Street. Tolles characterizes this as "a nicely proportioned and handsomely detailed example of early Salem Federal domestic arcmtecture." The main block is rectangular in plan, with a symmetrical 5 bay facade, facing north on Federal Street with a rear ell. The clapboard walls rise from a granite foundation to an asphalt shingle ridge-hip roof, which is penetrated by two large interior brick chimneys, one on the east and one on the west slope. The building is three bays deep and has features typical of the style including cornerboards and a simple cornice. The facade is notable for detail such as the central Palladian doorway, framed by Doric Pilasters supporting a closed molded pediment set on an entablature enriched by triglyphs and guttae. There is a granite stoop at grade in front of the entry and a single light transom sits above the six-panel door. The first story window cornices repeat the ornamented entablature found at the entry. The windows at the second story of the facade and at the 1st and 2nd story of the side elevations have a simple cornice cap molding. The third story windows have molded surrounds. Shuttered windows contain 6/6 sash at the 1st & 2nd stories and 8/8 sash at the 3rd There are secondary entries at the center bay of the east and west elevations which are set in eared surrounds each with a transom over the door surmounted by a cornice molding. At the west elevation, a one story bay with a flat roof projects from the south bay. The rear two-story ell has a shed roof, clapboard siding and is one bay deep. The building sits at the sidewalk with the sill almost at the level of the sidewalk. There is a wood gate at the east side of the building and a picket fence rims the east border of the lot. A paved parking area is west of the house and a wood fence encloses the rear yard which has a brick patio. There is a clapboard shed in the rear yard with a wood shingle gable roof. HISTORICAL NARRATIVE see continuation sheet Discuss the history of the building. Explain its associations with local (or state) history. Include uses of the building and the role(s) the owners/occupants played within the community. 113 Federal Street was constructed c. 1795 for Joseph Felt, a housewright. The previous owner of the land was William Pickman. According to Tolles, the house was originally planned as a double house but was apparently occupied by the Felt family alone for many years. As a housewright, Felt may have constructed this building, but no definitive evidence has yet confirmed this. The Felt family owned the house until the early 20th century, when Eliza A Hoffman (a relative) left it in her will to the Proprietors of the North Meeting House in Salem. They sold it to Anna J. Coan in 1906. The 1911 map indicates that this property was owned by Alice J. Gove, which may have been a misspelling of Anna J. Coan. The property was acquired by the Salem Savings Bank from Anna J. Coan through foreclosure in 1938 and it subsequently changed hands a number of times between 1941 and 1964. This property currently is occupied as two or more units.
