The Massachusetts Historical Commission (MHC) has converted this paper record to digital format as part of ongoing
projects to scan records of the Inventory of Historic Assets of the Commonwealth and National Register of Historic
Places nominations for Massachusetts. Efforts are ongoing and not all inventory or National Register records related to
this resource may be available in digital format at this time.
The MACRIS database and scanned files are highly dynamic; new information is added daily and both database
records and related scanned files may be updated as new information is incorporated into MHC files. Users should
note that there may be a considerable lag time between the receipt of new or updated records by MHC and the
appearance of related information in MACRIS. Users should also note that not all source materials for the MACRIS
database are made available as scanned images. Users may consult the records, files and maps available in MHC's
public research area at its offices at the State Archives Building, 220 Morrissey Boulevard, Boston, open M-F, 9-5.

BUILDING FORM
ARCHITECTURAL DESCRIPTION
Describe architectural features. Evaluate the characteristics of the building in terms of other buildings within the
community.
47-49 Washington Square North is a 2 1/2-story doublehouse which rests on a high brick foundation and is oriented with its
entryless, four-bay wide gable end to the street. The clapboarded building is outlined by a wide watertable, cornerboards and
a molded cornice with returns on the ends. A series of four tall brick chimneys rise from the corners of the gable roof.
Symmetrical in design, the building displays a central entrance on both the side elevations, while the outer bays are set close
to the ends of the elevation. On each side the door is flanked by partial sidelights and fluted pilasters. Suspended above the
entrance is a rectangular bay window resting on the freestanding, shingled hip door hood below. The western entrance is
fronted by granite steps and flanked by latticed panels. On the east side there are wooden steps with stairs that are adjacent
to the house. Windows contain 6/6 sash with molded surrounds and blinds. Punctuating the basement are additional 6/6
sash. A gable dormer rises from the west slope. Extending behind the west half of the building is a single-story, shed-roofed
wing. A two-story wing is offset and angles back from the northeast corner of #49. There is an early 20th century sunporch
on the first floor.
The house is set directly on the sidewalk. An asphalt driveway extends along the west side of the house. On the east side
there is only a narrow alley with brick sidewalk between this house and its neighbor to the east.
HISTORICAL NARRATIVE
Describe the history of the building. Explain its associations with local (or state) history. Include uses of the building and
the role(s) the owners/occupants played within the community.
According to research prepared for Historic Salem, Inc., this house (formerly 3 Brown Street) was constructed by Jonathan
Kimball, housewright in 1834. When completed it was valued at $1600. It does not appear that Kimball ever lived in the
house but resided nearby, at 29 Pleasant Street (now Winter Street). Kimball sold the property in 1846 to George Dodge,
trader, for $3000. Dodge owned a grocery and clothing store at 122 Derby Street. George Dodge is shown as the owner on
I the 1874 map; Edwin H. Dodge owned the house in 1897. In 1885 George Dodge was granted a building permit for a two-
story addition, 14'xl9'. In 1909 Dodge sold the property to Rose Davis, wife of Abraham and in 1910 Davis sold it to
I Michael and Anna O'Malley although the 1911 map erroneously lists Davis as the owner. The O'Malleys occupied #47 until
1961 when it was sold to Philip and Katherine Hutchinson. Loretta Powers purchased the property in 1963, selling in three
years later to Ralph and Jeanette Countee (Dee 1974).
