The Massachusetts Historical Commission (MHC) has converted this paper record to digital format as part of ongoing
projects to scan records of the Inventory of Historic Assets of the Commonwealth and National Register of Historic
Places nominations for Massachusetts. Efforts are ongoing and not all inventory or National Register records related to
this resource may be available in digital format at this time.
The MACRIS database and scanned files are highly dynamic; new information is added daily and both database
records and related scanned files may be updated as new information is incorporated into MHC files. Users should
note that there may be a considerable lag time between the receipt of new or updated records by MHC and the
appearance of related information in MACRIS. Users should also note that not all source materials for the MACRIS
database are made available as scanned images. Users may consult the records, files and maps available in MHC's
public research area at its offices at the State Archives Building, 220 Morrissey Boulevard, Boston, open M-F, 9-5.

BUILDING FORM 44 Broad St., Salem
ARCHITECTURAL DESCRIPTION see continuation sheet
Describe architectural features. Evaluate the characteristics of this building in terms of other buildings
within the community.
44 Broad Street is a much altered example of a neighborhood store, rare in the Mclntire district. Set
directly on the sidewalk on a narrow lot, it is a two-and-one-half-story building on a rectangular
plan. The building is two bays wide by three bays deep. It has a front-gable roof clad in slate, and
pierced by two slate-sided, gabled wall dormers at each side. A chimney exists near the rear of the
east slope. The foundation is concrete and the walls are clad in wood shingles (first story), and
asphalt shingles (second story). The recessed entry (west bay) has a transom and contains a glazed,
panelled door. Windows generally have 2/2 sash, or are tripartite with 2/2 and 1/1 sash. Other
features include a cornice at the head of the first story, deep eaves and cornice returns. In addition to
the altered siding, the first story appears to have originally had a storefront, which has been filled.
HISTORICAL NARRATIVE see continuation sheet
Discuss the history of the building. Explain its associations with local (or state) history. Include uses
of the building and the role(s) the owners/occupants played within the community.
Located in an area destroyed by the Salem fire of 1914 and rebuilt during the subsequent decade, 44
Broad Street was probably constructed c. 1915. There may have been two previous buildings on the
site: a house which existed by 1837, and replacing it by 1897, a grocery store/residence. John Wright,
a cordwainer, appeared in the 1837 directory at this address, and owned the property as late as 1874.
In 1837 he also had a tenant, Sarah Durant, a seamstress. By 1897 the earlier building appears to have
been replaced by a building and small outbuilding (NE); it was owned and occupied by P.O.
Driscoll, grocer. It continued in use as a grocery and residence in 1910, when S. B. Dolan occupied it
and operated a grocery store there. Unlike most addresses rebuilt after the 1914 fire, there is no gap
in city directory listings for this property, suggesting that it was rebuilt immediately following the
fire. Members of the Dolan family continued to operate Dolan's Market and reside at this address as
late as 1950. During the latter half of the twentieth century the building has been occupied as a multi-
family residence.
