The Massachusetts Historical Commission (MHC) has converted this paper record to digital format as part of ongoing
projects to scan records of the Inventory of Historic Assets of the Commonwealth and National Register of Historic
Places nominations for Massachusetts. Efforts are ongoing and not all inventory or National Register records related to
this resource may be available in digital format at this time.
The MACRIS database and scanned files are highly dynamic; new information is added daily and both database
records and related scanned files may be updated as new information is incorporated into MHC files. Users should
note that there may be a considerable lag time between the receipt of new or updated records by MHC and the
appearance of related information in MACRIS. Users should also note that not all source materials for the MACRIS
database are made available as scanned images. Users may consult the records, files and maps available in MHC's
public research area at its offices at the State Archives Building, 220 Morrissey Boulevard, Boston, open M-F, 9-5.

BUILDING FORM 1-3 North Pine Street
ARCHITECTURAL DESCRIPTION See continuation sheet.
Describe architectural features. Evaluate the characteristics of this building in terms of other buildings
within the community.
This 2 1/2-story, 6-bay, center-entry, gable-end house is 3 bays deep and has
a pair of interior chimneys. Eaves are close. Window frames are molded and
window sash are 6/6. The only major, ornamental feature is the door frame
that trims a pair of separate entrances at the middle of the main facade.
It is extremely simple, but substantial and consists of smooth-shafted, Doric
pilasters flanking each door, a filleted frieze, and a projecting cornice.
Although the door frame is unaltered, the entrances themselves have been
recently remodelled. The doors have been replaced with modern ones and the
former transoms and long side lights have been removed or covered.
HISTORICAL NARRATIVE See continuation sheet.
Discuss the history of the building. Explain its associations with local (or state history. Include uses
of the building and the role(s) the owners/occupants played within the community.
This double house appears to date from the 1830's or 1840's. The building is
an example of traditional, early nineteenth century construction with only the
Greek Revival style door surround to provide an indication of when it
was built. Other exterior features, such as the windows, the feather edge
clapboards, the narrow cornice and the chimneys, are typical of the first
quarter of the nineteenth century.
No owner is noted for this property on the 1851 map. In 1874, it is
attributed to Patrick Hennesey. Hennesey was listed as a currier in the
nineteenth-century directories. He continued to own the property into the
twentieth century. A double house, half of it was rented to tenants.
For example, in 1882 the tenant was Patrick J. Lyon, who worked as a hair
dresser in Higginson Square.
The house is a good example of the type of dwelling acquired by an Irish-
American working class family in mid-19th century Salem.
