Historic New England is proposing repairs to the front section of fence along the west perimeter property boundary of the Phillips House located at 34 Chestnut Street, Salem, MA and in the McIntire Historic District. The work would include careful removal of the section of fence to our in-house carpentry shop, wood dutchman repairs to the top and bottom rails as necessary, and repainting. The repair work would include matching profiles, dimensions, and paint color in kind. Following repairs, the fence would be re-installed. There are no detail changes proposed. The end of the bottom rail closest to the street has rotted and will need a Dutchman repair. The middle rail is flat sawn and the grain is separating in the center. The bottom box detail is in need of some stabilization. Paint failure is extensive, especially where the rose bush is growing over the top rail.
