Message:
I am writing in reference to a potential commemoration of a Boston Tea Party
Participant buried within Broad Street Cemetery. The Boston Tea Party Ships
& Museum is gearing up for the 246th Anniversary & Annual Reenactment of the
Boston Tea Party on December 16th, 2019. In addition to a full-scale
reenactment that takes place every December 16th, we have been exploring
additional ways to commemorate the lives and stories of those involved in one
of the most important events in American history.
Our mission is to build awareness of, and pay homage to, the everyday
citizens that were involved in this momentous event. Last year we worked
with the City of Boston and the Historic Burying Grounds Initiative to
temporarily place special commemorative markers at the graves of known Boston
Tea Party participants within 4 of the historic burying grounds in downtown
Boston. This program was a great success and generated a great deal of
public interest in these historical figures. Additionally, there was
considerable press interest in this program. Attached is an article from the
Boston Globe that also features images of the commemorative markers
themselves. This story was picked up by the AP and had an incredible 200
million impressions across 173 world-wide news outlets!
We plan on working with the City of Boston again in 2019 to place these
commemorative markers once more, but we also hope to expand our outreach and
place additional markers in cemeteries and burying grounds in nearby
communities throughout Massachusetts. The ultimate goal is to place a
commemorative marker at the grave of every known Boston Tea Party participant
throughout the country by 2023 as the nation celebrates the 250th anniversary
of the Boston Tea Party.
Broad Street Cemetery is the final resting place of Boston Tea Party
participant John Prince. We are reaching out to see if the City of Salem
would be willing to allow the Boston Tea Party Ships & Museum to place a
commemorative marker at this grave site. The hope would be to place the
marker during the month of November or early December.
Of course, we would be willing and excited to meet with you or the
appropriate representative, or have a conference call to discuss this program
and answer any questions you may have. Thank you very much for your time and
consideration!
Best,
Evan O'Brien
