42 Warren St. - Historical Commission - Window Project Description of Work FROM:William J. Durkin and Abby Elizabeth Conway TO:Salem Historical Commission DATE:November 11, 2019 RE:42 Warren Street - Request for Certificate of Appropriateness, Description of Work Proposed The owners of 42 Warren Street (the Property), William J. Durkin and Abby Elizabeth Conway (the Owners), respectfully request a Certificate of Appropriateness for modifications to the exterior of the Property. The Property is located in the McIntyre Historic District and subject to the Salem Historical Commission Guidelines. The Owners wish to renovate the kitchen in the Property, and in order to do so are seeking permission to modify the windows on the southwest facade (the left side when facing from Warren Street) and a window on the rear facade of the Property. Southwest facade The southwest facade windows are visible from Warren Street, a public way. The existing windows are two side-by-side windows that each measure 59 by 33 inches. The Owners propose replacing these windows with a single window measuring 40 by 27 inches. The Owners intend for the replacement window to be a J.B. Sash Proper Bostonian with a wood exterior. In choosing the size for the replacement window, the Owners looked to other window sizes already in place on the home. The proposed replacement window is the same size as another window on the southwest facade (on the second level) and similar size as a window on the rear of the home. The Owners propose moving the original shutters from that rear window (see section below) and installing them adjacent to the replacement window. The other windows on this facade are of various shapes and sizes. They include: -A hexagonal stained-glass window on the first level (19 inches across) -A rectangular, fixed wood window with cathedral-style muntins (22 by 35 inches) on the first level -A rectangular window on the second level (59 by 39 inches) -A rectangular window on the second level (40 by 27 inches) Rear facade Also in connection with the kitchen renovation, the Owners request permission to enlarge a window on the rear of the Property. This window is visible from certain angles on Essex Street during times of year when it is not obstructed by foliage. (The Property is located directly behind the fire station at 415 Essex Street, which mostly obscures it.). The Owners wish to replace a 42 by 27 inch window with a larger, 42 by 37 inch window. The replacement window will have a wood exterior and match the aforementioned replacement window. The window’s trim will be painted to match existing trim on the home. If the Commission desires, the Owners will install wood replacement shutters that fit the replacement window and be painted to match other shutters. There are six other windows on the rear facade: -Two rectangular windows on the second level (59 by 39 inches) -Four six-pane casement windows on the first level (collectively 58 by 29 inches) In support of this Request, the Owners will submit proposed elevation drawings, photographs, and details about the proposed replacement windows in advance of the Commission meeting. 2
