11 Orne Square - proposed resolution letter from owner RECEIVED Pam Coffin x— D 11 Orne Square MAY 13 2919 Salem, MA 01970 DEPT. OF PLANNING & May 9, 2019 COMMUNITY DEVELOPJIENT To The Salem Historical Commission: I am writing in response to the Salem Historical Commission's letter dated April 2, 2019 concerning my fence at 11 Orne Square. I have reviewed the changes proposed by the Commission and provide the following resolution. consulted with JC Fence, who designed, constructed and installed the fence to review the modifications proposed by the Commission. The modifications will prevent the gate from operating correctly since moving the posts behind the pickets will interfere with the mechanism that opens and closes the gate. In addition, moving the pickets will interrupt the continuous line of the fence along the sidewalk which was designed for a cohesive look and a secure yard. To find a solution to this matter, I contacted a local architect who works on historic properties to look at the fence and to suggest an alternative that would allow the gate to operate while maintaining the look of a picket fence. The compromise that was suggested would be to remove the caps and cut the posts down to an angle consistent with other fences on the Square. I have attached a rendering of the proposed change. Please note that the fence will be painted Orne Square Green (similar to Benjamin Moore's Essex Green) which is darker than the green in the rendering. The fence removed by the Orne Square Condominium Association was very short, just 2 %feet high, with flat boards and a continuous cap along the top. I believe that the new fence is more in keeping with the other fences on the Square. In addition, I have the support of the Orne Square Board and that of my neighbors and hope that you approve the suggested modification. appreciate your consideration of this solution in lieu of rebuilding the entire fence. Respectfully submitted, Pam Coffin y• ' 9 T ' ; • *a;• - _ ,ter-., e q p VIP As "M low if . _ r r. Y •.---T ~-f•' ' -1 4 S
