RE: 11 Orne Square
Dear Ms. Coffin:
The Commission has reviewed your letter offering an alternative design solution for addressing the existing
violation regarding the fence at your property at 11 Orne Square. In its issuance of a Certificate of
Appropriateness for the fence after it was constructed, the Commission required that the installed fence be
modified and offered two different design options (see attached certificate). One of these options allowed the
existing fence posts to remain as installed (with caps removed) with the condition that the new fence pickets
be temporarily removed, a filler rail installed on the outside of the posts, and the pickets reinstalled onto the
filler rail to preserve the original design of a continuous run of fencing. The Commission believes that this
option will not prevent the gate from operating correctly since the fence posts will remain in their current
location and only the fence pickets will be moved forward onto the street face of the posts. Therefore, the
Commission does not approve your proposed resolution as presented.
If you have questions, please feel free to contact Patti Kelleher at the Department of Planning and
Community Development, 98 Washington Street, 2nd Floor, Salem, MA (978) 619-5685.
Sincerely,
Larry Spang
