BUILDING FORM
ARCHITECTURAL DESCRIPTION
Describe architectural features. Evaluate the characteristics of the building in terms of other buildings within the
community.
4 Hamilton Street is a 11/2-story,3 x 1-bay,clapboarded dwelling which is set with its broad side to the street. The building
is set directly on the sidewalk, above a high foundation faced in granite with brick on the side elevations. The center entrance
contains a modern four-panel door with a large three-light transom. The entrance appears to have been reconfigured;the door
may have originally been raised and the entrance possibly recessed. Framing the door are pilasters resting on granite blocks
and supporting a full entablature. The building displays a simple wooden watertable and comerboards which give rise to
projecting eaves. Windows contain 6/6 sash with molded surrounds, storm windows and shutters. A continuous shed dormer
spans the front slope of the asphalt-shingled,gable roof. In the center there is a shuttered window set into a Palladian-like
opening with a semicircular cap and a rectangular, clapboarded panel to each side. The center opening is flanked by two 616
windows.
Extending behind the main block is a 1 1/2-story ell exhibiting a continuous wall surface with the north wall of the front
section. An additional shed dormer spans the north roof slope. Constructed after 1970,a single-story addition at the
southeast comer fills the space between the main block and the ell. Vertical boards cover the foundation.
HISTORICAL NARRATIVE
Describe the history of the building. Explain its associations with local(or state)history. Include uses of the building and
the role(s) the owners/occupants played within the community.
According to research prepared for Historic Salem,Inc.this house was constructed in 1858 by Captain Charles Hoffman for
his gardener,Hugh Wilson. The house was built on land which Hoffinan bought from Gilbert Newhall in 1845. Hoffman
was first taxed for the house in 1858. Hoffinan, one of Salem's old time African merchants, lived at 26 Chestnut beginning
about 1840. His garden was considered the finest in Salem and included three greenhouses extending along Hamilton Street.
Hugh Wilson entered Hoffman's employ in 1844. He was born in Edinburgh, Scotland in 1818. Captain Hoffman sold the
house on Hamilton Street to Wilson in 1877. After the Captain's death in 1878 Wilson continued working for Mrs.Hoffinan,
totaling 55 years of employment with the familyIn 1906 it was sold by Wilson's children to Mary Elizabeth Phinney, who
continued to own it until 1910. Ellen Looney purchased the house from Walter McDonald in 1912 and sold it to Mary
Louise Shea in 1919. The Shea family continued to own the property until 1967 when it was sold to Virginia Lewis. Ten
years later it was purchased by Charles and Susan Gilligan.
The Salem Historic District Study Committee Investigation Report indicated that this house was formerly located in the yard
of the Pickering House on Broad Street although this could not be verified(Reardon, SHDSCI,v. 3,p. 91).
