The Peabody-Essex Museum is submitting this application for re-painting of the Daniel Bray House as part of its ongoing restoration. This will involve a color scheme change. We have worked with Amy Cole Ives of Sutherland Consulting, who conducted extensive scientific analysis to deterimine the color scheme of lite house from 1806 through 1830,the period of the buildings primary historic significance. Analysis has determined that the body of the house was originally painted a deep chocolate brown(Spanish brown pigment in pine tar), and the trim and sashes were a medium orange (a mix of red iron oxide, yellow ocher and lead white pigments)installed over lead white primer. The analysis further determined that his paint scheme was on the building for 20 to 30 years, as evidenced by significant soiling and degradation from ultraviolet light. The color cards submitted with this application are brush-outs of custom colors, matched to the original paint samples. These were scientifically measured using a polarized-light microscope. We do not have any evidence for the original color of the exterior doors because both were missing.New doors are being made, matched to the design details of the surviving interior doors. We would like to have them faux grained to resemble mahogany, similar to the doors on the nearby 1804 Gardner-Pingree house.
