Dear Nicole,
Thank you for asking me to look at your windows. They are original to the house and are worth
restoring.
First I would strongly recommend new storm windows. The Harvey TruChannel storm window
is excellent and Steve Hadley is an installer with a gentle touch for older homes. He can be
reached at 978-317-1965.
It appears that someone"worked" on them at some point removing what was probably the
original paint on some sash but not on all. Normally I price things by the window but in your
case I will price it by the sash—those that have been stripped and those that haven't.
Our process:
Remove windows from the interior. Limit paint disturbance, use HEPA vacs exclusively, clean
up site after sash removal. Sash are placed in 6 mil bags for safe removal.
In workshop—remove all paint from unstripped windows using steam, infrared and hand
scraping only. No chemical paint removal.
Repair any rot, structural damage, cosmetic damage
Re-glaze with original glass where possible, replace broken or scratched panes with antique glass
Prime and paint exterior with customer specified paint
Prime and paint interior with customer specified paint
Install spring bronze weather stripping for lower sash
Install new back stops under upper sash as needed
Install bird head catches to hold lower sash open safely
*Only one window, the two over two window has ropes and pulleys. The other windows have no
counter balance system. We would install bird head catches to hold them open safely.
rEstimated cost per sash $735 plus materials such as glass.
To just chip and glaze the front door sidelites, the estimated cost is $200 to make the windows
more solid and have less glass exposed.
