FIRST SPIRITUALIST CHURCH OF SALEM
A Guiding Light Since 1894

From: First Spiritualist Church of Salem
Date: August 14,2018
RE: Grounds Repair and Beautification
To the Members of the Salem Historical Commission,
The First Spiritualist Church of Salem is a chartered affiliate church of the National Spiritualist Association of Churches
(NSAC)since 1894 and has resided at our present location at 34 Warren St.,Salem.Over the years, the small
membership(less than 50 members at the present time)has not been able to fully support the array of maintenance,
repair, and landscaping work that has been (and continues to be) needed. Each year,we select a small project, such as
planting around the church signage; however, this piecemeal approach is no longer adequate.
To this end,the Board of Trustees has prepared a Grounds Repair and Beautification List to be tackled as funds allow.
Originally built by and for the Quakers,it is our intent to file for historical recognition per our building's history that
includes serving as the home to a congregation of Black Methodists. Hopefully, the recognition of this rich history can
allow ps to apply for federal, state, and local grants to restore the church to its full beauty. In addition, the NSAC holds
the ggit claim deed to the church and the Board of Trustees is appealing to the National Board for financial assistance.
i
We look forward to working with the Historical Commission with the goal of becoming a neighborhood gem,a proud
part of the historical tours of Salem, and more fully involved with the community of Salem.Your advice, guidance, and
insight are both appreciated and very much needed.
Attached, please find our Grounds Repair and Beautification Priority List and photographs of the current condition of the
First Spiritualist Church of Salem.

FIRST SPIRITUALIST CHURCH OF SALEM
A Guiding Light Since 1894
Grounds Repair and Beautification Priority List 2018-2025
Priorities for 2018
Restore the landscaping: remove all overgtown and unhealthy plantings;till, mulch and begin replanting under the
direction of landscape artist Gary Gill and arborist Patrick Cheney. The landscape plan focuses on perennials and low
maintgnance plants. The full landscaping of the grounds will be completed in Spring 2019. Example of plantings include:
Rhododendrons, hydrangeas, tiger lilies, tall ornamental grasses, petit black-eyed Susans, echinacea, and much more.
Replace the two back utility doors: replace the rotting rear church doors that serve as a utility door to the basement and an
egress for the sanctuary and the basement.
Strip and repaint the front French doors facing Warren St, side door facing South Pine St.and the two new utility doors:
proposal to paint all doors white to match the trim. Currently, the doors are a non-historic 1970s green; we would like to
refresh the green by painting the doors white. We propose that this fits into the simple design of a Quaker Meeting House
and will blend better within the historical neighborhood.
Priorities for 2019
Portico: repair the base of the right pillar, purchase new historically accurate (electric) porch light, replace security lights,
repaint:all portico trim white, scrape dental molding and railings and repaint(railings are currently black and will remain so).
Landscaping: complete the replanting and design of the landscaping.
Front Signage: repair(or, K necessary) replace the front sign maintaining the same design and painted white with black
lettering. Install LED lights within the sign casing for gentle night illumination.
Side Entrance: replace hanging light with an historically accurate (electric) light, install a wrought iron handrail on stairs for
safety (paint it white to be unobtrusive and blend in with the entranceway), assess pitch of side entrance and obtain
estimate if repair is necessary.
Rear Escape Stairs: Wash, seal and paint white.
Roof Line: Repair the rotting wood eaves and paint white.
Priorities for 2020
Flood mitigation: conduct assessment and install system to mitigate basement flooding.
Priorities for 2021
Brick Exterior: conduct assessment of moftar, powerwash brick, obtain estimate for brick repointing and lintel repair. Begin
brick restoration as funding allows. Continue annually until completed.
Priorities for 2021 and Beyond
Windows: replace all lower windows along South Pine Street that were damaged during city jack-hammering.
