Replacement of deteriorated wooden gutters with fiberglass gutters. Fiberglass gutters are manufactured to look
like wood, but with better rain performance and less maintenance.
The existing gutters have several locations that are rotted through,or have pulled away from the rafters related to
ice dam issues. In addition, one corner had damage related to squirrel intrusion that currently has temporary wire
mesh repair.
The scope of work includes replacing the gutters, and checking and replacing fascia boards as needed. The
intention is to repair and restore functionality while maintaining the historical design and appearance.
The fiberglass product to be used is manufactured by FiberGutter of Halifax, MA http://www.fibergutter.com/.
They have been approved by several historical societies already, including Cambridge,Lexington, Concord, and
Newport, RL

Andrea,
The Commission meets twice a month (first and third Wednesdays) so it usually isn't a long process. If you can get me
an application by May 21', 1 can add you to the June 61h agenda. I have attached an application form to this email—
not sure if I sent you one earlier. And how exciting for a new baby!

Hi Patti,
Thanks for such a quick reply! We will submit a Certificate of Appropriateness and see how it goes. How long does it
typically take to get onto the meeting schedule? We're expecting a baby in September,so I'm hoping to have the job
(and about a million other things!)done by then to minimize disruptions.
Best,
Andrea

The Commission has not received an application for fiberglass gutters before but I believe they would be interested in
s considering them as an alternative to wood gutters. The Cambridge Historical Commission approves fiberglass gutters
in their local historic districts and their Director Charles Sullivan spoke at one of our workshops last year on the
benefits of this type of gutter. Since it would be a change of material, the Commission would review it through a
I Certificate of Appropriateness process. So glad to hear that you were able to work with the Window Woman company
to restore your windows!

Best,
Patti

Hi Patti,
As we move down the list of things to repair on our neglected old (new to us!) house,we've reached gutters. Our
wooden gutters are rotted through, along with some of the trim/fascia boards, and we've had several quotes on
repair. Multiple contractors have recommended replacement in the same style due to the deterioration of the existing
gutters.
We have had a couple strongly recommend more durable fiberglass gutters in the same style--the samples provided
do look the same from the outside--but we weren't sure that is allowable under historical guidelines. Is that
something we could submit an application for? If it's allowable we would prefer not to have something with so much
upkeep as long as it looks the same. Let me know what you think.
Best, `
Andrea Gimler
PS:We talked a while ago about window restoration --Colin and I have since worked with the Window Woman
company and loved them! They did touch-ups around the house and full restoration on some of our worst windows.
We highly recommend them.
