INDICATE THE PROPOSED AUTOMATIC SPRINKLER SYSTEM TO BE INSTALLED WITHIN BUILDING 3, LOCATED AT 9
SOUTH MASON STREET IN SALEM, MASSACHUSETTS.
THE OWNER OF THIS PROPERTY PLANS TO RENOVATE AND ADD ADDITIONS TO THE TWO EXISTING BUILDINGS
(BUILDING 1 AND 3) AT THIS TIME. EACH BUILDING WILL BE RENOVATED AS INDICATED ON THE ARCHITECTURAL
DRAWINGS. EACH BUILDING WILL CONTAIN RESIDENTIAL DWELLING UNITS AND IS CONSTRUCTED OF COMBUSTIBLE
MATERIALS, REQUIRING THE SPRINKLER SYSTEM TO BE DESIGNED AND INSTALLED IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE
REQUIREMENTS OF NFPA 13 (2013 EDITION) AND THE 9TH EDITION OF THE MASSACHUSETTS STATE BUILDING CODE.
BUILDING 3 CONSISTS OF AN EXISTING 2-UNIT BUILDING WHICH WILL HAVE A 5-UNIT ADDITION CONSTRUCTED AS
INDICATED. EACH UNIT WILL CONSIST OF A GROUND LEVEL, SECOND LEVEL AND THIRD LEVEL. THE BUILDING WILL
HAVE AN UNHEATED CRAWLSPACE BENEATH IT WHICH WILL BE UNHEATED AND WILL NOT BE USED FOR STORAGE
OR MECHANICAL EQUIPMENT. THE CRAWLSPACE WILL BE PROTECTED BY A DRY -PIPE SPRINKLER SYSTEM
CONSISTING OF GALVANIZED PIPING AND CORROSION -RESISTANT SPRINKLER HEADS. THE DRY SYSTEM WILL BE
PITCHED TO LOW POINT DRAINS WHICH SHALL BE PROPERLY DRAINED IN ACCORDANCE WITH NFPA 25. THE
RESIDENTIAL AREAS WILL BE FED FROM A 2" SPRINKLER ZONE USING CPVC SPRINKLER PIPING AND RESIDENTIAL
SPRINKLER HEADS AS INDICATED.
THIS RESIDENTIAL SPRINKLER SYSTEM HAS BEEN DESIGNED IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE REQUIREMENTS OF NFPA
13 (2013 EDITION) FOR A RESIDENTIAL BUILDING UP TO 4 STORIES IN HEIGHT, EXCEEDING 12,000 SF IN AGGREGATE
FLOOR AREA. THE TOP STORY OF THIS BUILDING DOES NOT EXCEED 30-FT ABOVE FIRE DEPARTMENT VEHICULAR
ACCESS AND THEREFORE NO STANDPIPE SYSTEM IS REQUIRED.
THE SPRINKLER CONTRACTOR SHALL FOLLOW THE LATEST REQUIREMENTS OF NFPA 13 (2013 EDITION),
MASSACHUSETTS STATE BUILDING CODE AND THE SALEM FIRE DEPARTMENT REQUIREMENTS.
THIS SYSTEM WILL BE SUPPLIED BY A NEW 6" FIRE SERVICE, TAPPED OFF THE EXISTING WATER MAIN ON SOUTH
MASON STREET. THE 6" SERVICE SHALL BE DESIGNED, INSTALLED, FLUSHED AND TESTED IN ACCORDANCE WITH
THE REQUIREMENTS OF NFPA 24 BY A LICENSED UNDERGROUND CONTRACTOR AND WILL ENTER THE HEATED
UTILITY ROOM AS INDICATED ON THIS DRAWING (DESIGNED BY OTHERS)
THE SPRINKLER CONTRACTOR WILL PROVIDE A 6x4" VIC-FLANGE, 4" BACKFLOW PREVENTER AND 4" MANIFOLD AS
INDICATED ON THIS DRAWING. A 2" STRAIGHT -PIPE RISER WILL SUPPLY THE RESIDENTIAL SPRINKLER PROTECTION
AND THE 4" DRY VALVE WILL DROP TO THE CRAWLSPACE BELOW (SEE DETAIL THIS SHEET)
THE SYSTEM HAS BEEN HYDRAULICALLY CALCULATED IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE REQUIREMENTS OF NFPA 13,
INCLUDING THE FOUR HYDRAULICALLY MOST DEMANDING HEADS IN A SINGLE COMPARTMENT BASED ON THE
REQUIREMENTS OF THE SPECIFIC SPRINKLER HEAD AND THE SPACING USED IN THIS DESIGN (16'x16' REQUIRING A
MINIMUM OF 16 GPM @ 7.6 PSI OR THE MINIMUM PRESSURE REQUIRED TO MEET 0.10 GPM/SF OVER THE ACTUAL
COVERAGE AREA). THE CRAWLSPACE DRY -SYSTEM HAS BEEN DESIGNED AS A LIGHT HAZARD OCCUPANCY PER
NFPA 13 REQUIREMENTS FOR AREAS OUTSIDE LIVING SPACES. REMOTE AREAS, DENSITIES AND HOSE STREAM
ALLOWANCES ARE INDICATED ON THIS DRAWING. SYSTEM DEMANDS HAVE BEEN COMPARED TO HYDRANT FLOW
DATA PERFORMED ON THE WATER MAIN IN SOUTH MASON STREET. COPIES OF THE CALCULATIONS HAVE BEEN

MANUFACTURERS INSTALLATION RECOMMENDATIONS. ALL DRY SYSTEM PIPING SHALL BE PITCHED TO
DRAIN WITH LOW -POINT AUXILIARY DRAINS AT SECTIONS OF PIPING SUBJECT TO WATER TRAPPING.
SPRINKLER CONTRACTOR SHALL PROVIDE PROTECTIVE PLATES WHERE CPVC PIPING IS RUN THROUGH
STUDS TO PREVENT PUNCTURING OF THE SPRINKLER PIPING DURING DRYWALL INSTALLATION AS
