a) For coverage area dimensions less than or between those indicated, use the minimum required flow for the next highest coverage
area for which hydraulic design criteria are stated.
(b) Requirement is based on minimum flow in GPM (LPM) from each sprinkler. The associated residual pressures are calculated using
the nominal K-factor. Refer to Hydraulic Design under the Design Criteria section.
(c) For NFPA 13 residential applications, the greater of 0.1 gpm/ft2 over the design area or the flow in accordance with the criteria in
this table must be used,

8.15.7.2* Sprinklers shall be permitted to be omitted where the exterior projections
are constructed with materials that are noncombustible, limited -combustible, or
fire retardant -treated wood as defined in NFPA 703.
8.15.7.3 Sprinklers shall be permitted to be omitted from below the exterior
projections of combustible construction, provided the exposed finish material on
the exterior projections are noncombustible, limited -combustible, or fire
retardant -treated wood as defined in NFPA 703, and the exterior projections
contain only sprinklered concealed spaces or any of the following unsprinklered
combustible concealed spaces:
(1) Combustible concealed spaces filled entirely with non- combustible insulation
(2) Light or ordinary hazard occupancies where noncombustible or
limited -combustible ceilings are directly attached to the bottom of solid wood joists
so as to create enclosed joist spaces 160 cubic ft or less in volume, including space
below insulation that is laid directly on top or within the ceiling joists in an
otherwise sprinklered attic [see 11.2.3.1.4(4)(d)]
(3) Concealed spaces over isolated small exterior projections not exceeding 55 sqft

Project Narrative
1- Building Description:
* Wood Frame Construction.
* Building Footprint = 4,200 sqft approximately
* Floors above grade = 3
* Floors below grade = 1
* Occupancies= Residential
* Hazardous materials = None known
* High storage = None known
2 - Applicable Laws, Regulations, Standards:
• NFPA 13 (2013) Installation of Sprinkler Systems
* Underwriters Laboratories Inc. Publications
* Manufacturer's Listed and Approved Design/Installation/Maintenance Manuals
3 - Design Responsibility for Fire Protection Systems:
* Shop drawings developed by Comprehensive Fire Protection LLC.
* Fire Alarm by others
* Kitchen/Cooking suppression by others
* Underground fire service by others
* Manual suppression systems by others
* Smoke control systems by others
4 - Fire Protection Systems to be installed:
The fire protection project consists of installing new sprinklers and pipe in a new building. The
system riser consists of a 4" Storz FDC, 4" wet riser, 3" dry riser, 4" water supply, and all other
required valves and fittings.
5 - Design Methodology:
Fire Sprinkler System Design Parameters:
* System(s) design to be per NFPA 13 (2013), local and State code.
* Sprinklers on 1st through 3rd floors to be residential type, white coated, recessed pendents or
sidewalls.
* Sprinklers on garage level to be commercial type.
* Install sidewall sprinklers to protect under garage doors.
* Calculation area within dwelling units to be the most hydraulically demanding 4 sprinklers
calculated to .10 density over the actual area protected.
* Calculation of sprinklers in the storage area to be at a density of .20 over 900 sqft using the
quick response area reduction allowance.
* Calculation of sprinklers in the garage to be at a density of .15 over 1950 sqft after increasing
the area by 30% for being a dry system.
* The garage and sprinkler room is protected by the dry system. All other areas are protected by
the wet system.
* Install a zone control assembly for each townhouse unit as shown.
* Install steel schedule 10 with grooved fittings or steel schedule 40 with threaded fittings on the
garage level.
* Install cpvc sprinkler pipe on levels 1-3.
CODE REFERENCES:
* Design and installation to conform to NFPA 13, 2013 editions.
* Design and installation to conform to State Code, Local Fire and Building Departments.
6 - Special considerations and descriptions:
* No official code interpretations.
* No official waivers or variances.
7 - Sequence of operation:
* Fire sprinkler activates.
* Water starts flowing and activates the water flow switch.
* Water flow switch sends alarm signal to alarm panel and Fire Department.
* Building alarm is activated.
8 - Testing criteria:
* Tests will be conducted to the satisfaction of local authorities.
* Tests to be set up and scheduled by the contractor.
* Water will be flowed from the inspector's test valve.
* Pipes to be pressure tested to 200 psi for two hours.
* All alarm and tamper switches to be tested for proper activation.
* Written approval of final tests to be obtained from the code official.
* Required fire sprinkler and aboveground piping reports to be submitted to the code officials.
