2 - Applicable Laws, Regulations, Standards:
* NFPA 13 (2013) Installation of Sprinkler Systems
* 780 CMR Mass. State Building Code (Current Edition)
* Underwriters Laboratories Inc. Publications
* Manufacturer's Listed and Approved Design/Installation/Maintenance Manuals
3 - Design Responsibility for Fire Protection Systems:
* Shop drawings developed by Comprehensive Fire Protection LLC.
* Fire Sprinkler P.E. of record is Alison Brackett.
* Fire Alarm design by others.
* Kitchen/Cooking suppression design by others.
* Underground fire service design by others.
* Manual suppression systems design by others.
* Smoke control systems design by others.
4 - Fire Protection Systems to be installed:
This fire protection project consists of installing a new fire sprinkler system in a new building.
Equipment to be installed per NFPA 13 and listed for fire protection use. Equipment includes: pipe,
sprinklers, standpipes, gate valves, dry -pipe valve, butterfly valves, water flow switches, gages,
water supply (by others), backflow preventer, hangers and a 6" free standing FDC.
5 - Design Methodology:
Fire sprinkler system and standpipe system to be supplied by the the municipal supply. Fire
sprinkler pipe 2" and larger to be steel schedule 10 with mechanical fittings. Pipe 1-1/2" and
smaller to be steel schedule 40 with threaded or grooved fittings. Residential area piping to be
CPVC. Exposed CPVC piping will not be accepted. Each floor or separate area is zoned.
Residential sidewalls are calculated per NFPA 13 at a spacing of 16 x 14 for 4 sprinklers at a Light
Hazard density of .10 gpm/sqft.
The interstitial space is calculated per NFPA 13 (2013) to Light Hazard (.10 gpm / 1,000 sqft) using
special application CC3 uprights with a 14 x 14 spacing.
Standpipes are calculated to provide 250 gpm @ 100 psi to 3 outlets in building 1 (2 standpipes as
specified by project engineer). Water supply provided by Fire Dept through FDC.
The Garage is calculated per NFPA 13 to Ordinary Hazard Group 1 (.15 gpm / 1950 sqft - dry
system) using dry pendents spaced at 10 x 12.
Water supply: Static = 82 psi Residual = 66 psi Flow = 1007 gpm (2/8/2019) by Williams &
Spa rages.
Residential Pendents: Hydraulic Design (NFPA 13)
For systems designed to NFPA 13, the number of design sprinklers is to be the four most
hydraulically demanding sprinklers. The minimum required discharge from each of the four
sprinklers is to be the greater of the following:
• The flow rates given in Tables A and B as a function of temperature rating and the maximum
allowable coverage area
• A minimum discharge of 0.1 GPM/ft2 over the design area comprised of the four most
hydraulically demanding sprinklers for actual coverage areas protected by the four sprinklers.
The number of design sprinklers specified in NFPA 13 for wet pipe systems is to be applied when
designing dry pipe systems.
CODE REFERENCES:
* Design and installation to conform to NFPA 13, 14 2013 edition
* Design and installation to conform to State Code, Local Fire and Building Departments.
6 - Special considerations and descriptions:
* No official code interpretations.
* No official waivers or variances.
7 - Sequence of operation:
* Fire sprinkler activates.
* Water starts flowing and activates the water flow switch.
* Water flow switch sends alarm signal to alarm panel and Fire Department.
* Building alarm is activated.
8 - Testing criteria:
* Tests will be conducted to the satisfaction of local authorities.
* Tests to be set up and scheduled by the contractor.
* Water will be flowed from the inspector's test valve.
* Pipes to be pressure tested to 200 psi for two hours.
* All alarm and tamper switches to be tested for proper activation.
* Written approval of final tests to be obtained from the code official.
* Required fire sprinkler and aboveground piping reports to be submitted to the code officials.
General Notes:
* HANGER INSTALLATION AND SPACING SHALL BE IN ACCORDANCE WITH N.F.P.A. #13
* ALL EQUIPMENT TO BE UL LISTED FOR FIRE PROTECTION USE.
* FIELD FOREMAN TO VERIFY LOCATION OF HIGH TEMPERATURE SPRINKLERS
AND INSTALL HIGH TEMPERATURE SPRINKLERS IN ACCORDANCE WITH N.F.P.A. #13
* IF REQUIRED, SLEEVES THROUGH WALLS AND FLOORS SHALL BE SCH. 10 LW. GALVANIZED
AND PACKED WITH NONCOMBUSTIBLE, SMOKE PROOF, AND WATERPROOF FIRE SEALANT.
* OWNER SHALL PROVIDE ADEQUATE HEAT IN ALL AREAS ENCLOSING WET TYPE
SPRINKLER PIPING TO PREVENT FREEZING AND FAILURE OF AUTOMATIC SPRINKLER SYSTEMS.
* PIPING DIMENSIONS SHOWN ON PLAN ARE CUT MEASURES UNLESS NOTED OTHERWISE.
