65 Federal St Narrative-calc 5.22.20Fire Protection Construction Documents Five Unit Dwelling 65 Federal St. Salem, Ma. 01970 Narrative Report Fire Sprinkler Installation By: Diablo Fire Protection, LLC 17 Libby St. Goffstown, NH 03045 Tel: (603) 820-2593 JASON CATALFO KAHAN FIRE PROTECTION NO. 483'.:.. TERM 05/22/2020 P2 FIRE PROTECTION FIRE SYSTEMS NARRATIVE REPORTS 903. 1.1 BASIS (METHODOLOGY) OF DESIGN Section 1.1 (1.a) Existing Building Description The existing building at 65 Federal St. is a five unit/family, three story, plus basement structure. The use group of this facility, as defined in 780 CMR is R1 Residential, constructed with combustible materials. Basement will also be used for residential occupancy. The existing building's total area is approximately 5,150 sq. ft., including basement. SECTION 2 — Applicable Laws, Regulations and Standards a) The Massachusetts State Building Code 9th Edition, 780 CMR Chapter 9, "Fire Protection System Requirements" b) NFPA Standards and Editions used for the design of each fire protection system: NFPA 13R, Installation of Sprinkler Systems in Residential multifamily dwellings, 2013 Edition NFPA 13, Installation of Sprinkler Systems, 2013 Edition. NFPA 25, Inspection, Testing and Maintenance of Sprinkler Systems, 2007 Edition. c) M.G.L. Chapter 146 and Chapter 148. SECTION 3 — Design Responsibility for Fire Protection Systems a) This project is developed under the following design responsibility: The Design Build Sprinkler Contractor (Diablo Fire Protection LLC) and the Fire Protection Professional Engineer (Jason C. Kahan, MA Registration # 48388) fully designs (complete layout and calculations) and specify through construction management collaboration, the fire protection system or systems to be installed. The Design Build Professional Engineer reviews and approves the completed shop drawings for code compliance. The Design Build Professional Engineer is considered the engineer of record and certifies system installation for code compliance at completion. (continue) P3 SECTION 4 — Fire Protection Systems to be installed SPRINKLER SYSTEM DESCRIPTION The new sprinkler system will be as follows: a) Mech Rm.; blk. steel pipe with CI Trd. fittings and commercial sprinklers. b) All residential areas; CPVC piping with CPVC glued type fittings and residential style sprinklers. A flow switch will be installed and wired to local smoke detectors, outdoors electric bell as well to a dialer alerting the Fire Dept. WATER SUPPLY New 1 1/2" or larger, fire protection underground copper pipe will be installed from the city water main into the basement. FIRE ALARM SYSTEMS AND COMPONENTS The flow switch and tamper switches will be connected, by others, to the house fire alarm and/or smoke detection system. For further description please see the "Fire Alarm Narrative" SECTION 5 — Fire Protection Systems Design Methodology This building will be protected with a NFPA 13R wet sprinkler system installed in accordance with 780 CMR TAB 903.2, as modified and permitted for 4 family dwellings. 903. 1.1 (1.b) SEQUENCE OF OPERATION Section 1 WET SPRINKLER SYSTEM System operates automatically upon the fusing of a single fire sprinkler. (continue) P4 1. Activation of a single sprinkler will drop the pressure in the system, activating a low pressure switch, which in turn will start-up the fire pump. 2. A water will discharge from the open sprinkler(s) activating the system flow switch. 3. Activation of this flow switch will "set off' a local horn and strobe and/or smoke detectors, and send an alarm to the Fire Dept. Station . 903. 1.1 (1.c) TESTING CRITERIA Section 1 Upon completion of the sprinkler system, the system shall be tested hydrostatically for 2 hours at 200 PSI by Arkon fire Protection Co. Inc. and witnessed by the General Contractor, the owner's Representative and, if desired, the Salem Fire Department. Upon final completion of the sprinkler, the sprinkler foreman and /or contractor will arrange final sprinkler inspection with the Fire Department. Section 2 The sprinkler system shall be tested and inspected thereafter by -annually, by a licensed sprinkler company Section 3 Upon final testing completion, all sprinkler closeout documents such as as -built drawings, Operation & Maintenance Manuals, and copies of the Material Letter of Compliance and Test Certificates will be forwarded to the Fire Department and building owner. The building owner's facility personnel will be trained (as necessary) on system operations immediately thereafter, prior to occupancy.
